WoTC in the Frying Pan

Not bad damage control on Ken's part. I'm not happy about a lot of things that have happened with DDI but at least he's trying to explain why things haven't gone as planned.

A beta test for the apps (I'm sure there is in-house stuff being done, right?) would be best.

I love the trial by fire aspect of computer betas... get the fans in there to nit-pick it to death, and usually, you get a better product...

People on the WoTC forum (which I've recently abandoned due to a certain community manager) have been pissed about the poor level of quality of management, content, and overall capabilities of WoTC's online components for a long time now.

The killing of the Dragon and Dungeon magazines ushered in an era of anger amongst its posters - and it's something that WoTC has largely ignored. Add in a power-hungry community manager who has a reputation for deleting or moving posts critical of him, and you're spelling out a looming disaster.

I am surprised that the thread started by Ken has not provoked a longer thread so far.

I don't know...Ken's post seems really smug and condescending to me and I wasn't bothered by the way things are with DDI in the first place since my expectations of WotC's software based endeavors are always abysmally low.

I met Ken Troop yesterday.
In fact, I had a pretty decent conversation with him.
Here is what I can tell you:

He is genuine.
He is upset that it isn't ready.
He is a Fan and wants everything right now just like we do.
He knows what we want and he seems to know that he needs to balance that with what will actually work and what is wanted by the masses.

We aren't getting something we payed for already. As it is, we are getting something for free. Eventually we will be paying for it. And as someone that once had 4 different Online MMO accounts, this is worth the money.
I got to play around with the DDI Visualizer & Generator. They aren't ready yet. But when they are, it's gonna be sweet.

I'll be first in the virtual line.

I'm with you there. A few years back, I loved hanging out there; but I've completely abandoned the "worship halls" of the new community manager ever since he started making changes there.

The real trick will be if there's any change at WoTC.

With the massive sales though, seems like it's the B5 quote about the peebles being unable to speak after the boulders or some such.

The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.

Though what does the sales of 4e have to do with WotC changing their customer service policies?

I have to say that my hopes for seeing any program available under DDI anytime soon are very, very low.

Of course, I won't be able to use them if and when they are released because of the ridiculous requirement of XP Service Pack 2. Are they not even going to support Vista, not to mention Mac OS and Linux? What year is this anyway that software can't be released for multiple platforms?

I have to say that if they aren't going to do it right then they should not do it at all.
