WotC WotC is hiring Senior Manager for Diversity, equity and inclusion.

Well, now I don't want to hire him because he's too old. He's got 20 years of work experience. He's overqualified. :D Carlton is a fresh out of college guy with no experience. Or, are we no positing a 40+ year old Carlton who, frankly, we have never met and have no idea what he's like?

Look, instead of being coy, why not just come out and say what you're hinting at?
I was indeed thinking about an adult, experienced Carlton!
Anyway, I already dropped the metaphor and explained my main point in the post I linked above:

The point of my example: the ability to understand racism and discrimination isn’t tied to race. A rich and privileged person of color might not understand racism as well as a white person that has experienced gaijin status in Japan.
Thus, hoping that the new Wotc hire will be a BIPOC, LGBTQ etcetera is misguided in my opinion. I hope they get the best person for the job, full stop.

If those two were the only candidates I'd let the position stay unfilled.
Interesting. For the sake of the example, those wouldn’t be the only candidates, just the most qualified by a fair margin.
Would you settle for a less qualified candidate? And if so, what are the personal characteristics that this candidate should have, that make them preferable to the more qualified candidates that I previously described?

(Note:I’m not being coy or manipulative here, I’m genuinely interested)

I'd put all the resumes in the bin and restart the recruitment process, maybe look at poaching a successful diversity manager from another company.

Hm. That’s not much of an answer, though. Poaching might fail, or you could restart the process and find yourself in a similar situation.

I guess my question to you here would be: why are the two (highly competent) candidates I described undesirable to you, and what would make a desirable candidate, in your opinion?

I'd pick Carlton. Despite his relatively sheltered and privileged upbringing, and his conservative instincts, he still began learning what it is to be a Black man in America as a teenager.

The "gaijin in Japan" bit is so out of touch...actually, I can't really comment on it without invoking a certain kind of gamer-guy stereotype, so I'll just leave it.

If you don't want to invoke a stereotype, don't bring it up in the first place. It's not like people won't get what you mean if you don't spell it out, so you ain't doing any better.

I liked the clip though. Interesting and relevant to the topic at hand.

Neither one of you is hiring for this role. Neither one of you even works for WotC, right? For you two to be discussing it as if you understand what's necessary for the role seems more than a little presumptive on both of your parts, honestly.
