<snip>(and its even going to have new combat-oriented base classes to boot).

that's not what it says... it says it will have combat orientated classes. The minis handbook says it will have new base classes...

D&D Miniatures - Am I just cynical, or does this sound familiar?

The "mass-battle miniatures kinda like but not really warhammer-but you can still play RPGs with them, really" thing didn't make the money it was expected to,

so now we have The "mass-battle miniatures kinda like but not really MageKnight-but you can still play RPGs with them, really"
Why are they randomized unless we are supposed to have to keep buying them to get that Displacer beast?

I hope I'm wrong, but this feels like a case of "follow the leader". Somebody has an Idea that minis are a vast untapped source of cash for D&D and they keep trying to find a way to convince us we need them.

Heh heh... Now that I've read (and typed) the actual blurb for the mini game it sounds *a lot* like Mage Knight more so now then when I first heard about it. I also don't understand the sizes listed as 40mm is huge! I'm hoping that's a typo of some kind but much of the info in the WotC catalog is as good as gold when product is finally released.
I love the idea of cheap minis but I hate the idea of collectible ones. I spent way too much money on Mage Knight and I don't want to go through that again.

True, but a bit of deductive reasoning would seem to indicate that they are base classes.

There are only base classes and prestige classes.
The prestige classes are revised, so cannot be new.
It says that there are new classes (and makes sure not to use the word "prestige", which is a pretty solid indicator in-and-of itself).

Ergo, the new classes in Complete Warrior must be base classes!

Talon: Is there any mention of Star Wars d20 releases in Q3? There has to be! :)

These are the last two books release for the Star Wars RPG in 2003:
Hero's Guide - June
Galactic Campaign Guide - August

I triple checked the Sept to Dec catalog and there's no new Star Wars at all. :(

Think that it could somehow be related to the other typo WotC made in regards to their miniatures?

Ayup, that's it. Whew, I'm glad it's a typo. Here's a question though: How are they going to designate on the mini what it's rarity level is? Mage Knight it's color and icon related.

Clearing Up

Talon: The 40mm entry is a typo, the sizes will be comprable to Chainmail. There will be 3 sizes of miniatures, Small (20mm), Medium (25mm), and Large (40mm) which correspond to creatures' size in the MM.

Alzrius: The reason that the expansion is actually a better deal is because of the random picks of miniatures.

"There will be 8 figures in the Expansion Pack ($9.99) with 1 rare, 3 uncommons and 4 commons. 16 figures in the Entry Pack ($19.99) with 1 rare, 5 uncommons, 10 commons."

Thats snagged from gamingreport.com http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=7790

Therefore, the incentive to get an entry pack is to get all the goodies, the incentive to get the expansions are to get more rares and uncommons. It has also been revealed that out of the original 80 miniatures, 30 (approx) will be rares. Rares will be better painted and include some PC-types. Commons and Uncommons will mostly be monsters, according to the source at wizards old chainmail boards.

Aren't we all. I think we can all give a collective sigh of relief over that.

No idea on that one. But then, who says it has to be designated on the mini itself? They are including a checklist in the Entry Pack, and it seems feasible that they could just include a rarity rating on there, since listings for a mere 80 miniatures wouldn't seem like a lot. We'll also be sure to know what mini is what since the stat card will probably have the picture on it.

What I want to know is, when they say that the packs are randomized, will that mean that you truly won't know what you get until you open the pack? Its one thing to do that with cards, and another with a $10 set of eight miniatures. If I were them, Id put a small listing on the package of what specific minis are inside (because it isn't cost effective to keep altering pics of the enclosed minis on the back of the box). Admittedly, they'd sell more packs if they didn't have listings of what's enclosed, but still, I think they'd annoy a lot more people too...actually, I just answered my own question about this, didn't I?

Ahh, so that's their strategy. Thanks for making that plain (and for the size info) Tech!

So 30 of the minis are rares...how many are uncommons?
