WotC stores: dead?

I went and looked at the comments, and someone mentioned Hasbro selling off D&D.

Yes -- there was a comment about Hasbro "shopping" D&D for $30 million.

This is the first I've heard of this, is it unwarranted, blah blah somebody reassure me that it won't happen :) My primary concern being that if D&D does change hands there will probably be a reprint of a lot of core stuff (4th edition) yadda yadda steal my money  And who else is around that would buy it, anyway? Parker Brothers? :p

I'm not sure why it would be bad for Ha$bro to sell D&D.

As to who could afford it -- probably the only RPG company would be White Wolf.

Parker Brothers is obviously out of the question since it is owned by Ha$bro (as is Milton Bradley). They own a lot of brands.

Looking back at my statements, I was an senseless gibbering mound, it seems.

I would think that Hasbro selling off D&D would mean that the new publisher would probably be inclined to put their own "stamp" on D&D, which to me sounds like a new edition. Does anyone else think this?

Likely. But I would expect Hasbro to produce a 4th Edition in short order anyway.

If I am not mistaken, it took quite a bit of time for WOTC to produce a new edition after buying T$R. Wizard$ bought T$R in 1997 and 3e came out in 2000. So if a new owner of the D&D label wanted to produce a new version with such drastic changes as 3e, it probably wouldn't be for another 3 years or so at the minimum. I would expect any 4th Edition (Hasbro or otherwise) to be basically compatible with 3e, even if it's not "OGLized."

Anyone have any idea if their be a sale? :D

Just got off the phone with the Albany NY Gamekeeper. They have started the clearance sale at 20% off everything but the magic cards. Thankfully I'd be more interested in the board games and D&D books.

Yes that's what my WoTC store said... I would be stoked at the sale but they've already off loaded all of their 3rd party books that are worthwhile and I can beat 20 % easy on WoTC books elsewhere...

I do know that my store is going to be increasing the % of the discount as time goes by... Probably at weekly increments and that the store closes on the 1st of February.

Just got back from my local WotC store (Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island). Picked up 3 boxes of the new D&D mini expansion Dragoneye and the Axis & Allies board game at 20% off. Spoke a bit with the clueless guy behind the counter, he said that the store would be increasing the discounts up through February. There was a ton of D&D books in the back (hidden behind a bunch of boxes). I hope that they keep the boxes there and I'll pick a bunch of books at 50-60% off.;)

My local WotC store was one of those that had just recently downsized and moved to a more out of the way corner of the mall. Just went in there this afternoon to look for deals but really there are none - yet. 20% off brings their prices down to about the level you can buy gaming stuff for at discounters. And since EVERYTHING they have was already at top sticker price it won't be worth it for some time yet.

For example, I also looked at Axis & Allies: Pacific, and A&A: Europe since we just introduced the kids of my players to the wonders of the classic A&A. $49.95 marked down 20% is bupkus. I'll go back once a week to keep tabs on when they drop their prices some more and when it gets close to 50% I'll be interested.

Actually, what I'm REALLY interested in is the harbinger starters they have. Their initial re-supply of Harbinger minis got screwed up and they ended up with a number of cases of starters that they never would have sold even IF they'd stayed in business. But if they get that Fire Sale discount going I'll be happy to take some of them off their hands before they go.

The same for the GameKeeper in Hillsdale (San Mateo, CA). It's 20% off this week ("except TCG", says the sign) and they believed would be closed before the end of February, though they weren't more specific than that.

Hopefully when all the Simpsons Clue games on the main floor are sold off they'll bring the D&D stuff out of the storage closet and sell it for 70% off - like they did with the 3rd party stuff.
