WotC Survey on Subscription Service

First Post
Hi all,

I just took that survey on Wizards.com about them offering a monthly subscription service.

Now, I know that I will probably get flamed for this, but I think it sounds like it might be a pretty good deal. Anything that can save me time as a DM and give me useful information and features (like the interactive maps and NPCs) is worth it.

I'd pay somewhere between $10 and $20 for access if they offer enough.

I read a lot of posts by people who on principle will not pay to play any online game or pay for content they think should be free. But you get what you pay for. Now, if Wizards just takes the stuff they give out for nothing currently and slaps a pricetag on it I won't be amused (and I told them as much in the survey) but if they offer more developed material I'll gladly pay (especially if it is material that they would never publish in a book, like boring economics and political info on campaign worlds).

So, at this point I'm willing to keep an open mind on the concept. How about you?

I think it's a great idea that I have no use for. But free or cost isn't the issue with me, I never use much of the web material companies place out there. But there are plenty of people that can make great use out of it and I think making a cost go with it can he3lp the quality stay high.

Maybe they will leave the free content and only charge for the new content. If they charge for the old stuff and whatever they add to it isn't of high enough value to warrant the subscription, they'll hear a lot of complaints.

I'm really hoping they will produce the kind of info that would be useful, but not have enough mass appeal to put it in a hard-copy book.

Ed Greenwood awhile back said that he had pages upon pages of information on the Forgotten Realms that would never see print since it was not the kind of info that would sell well, but if they offer it on a subscription service with a bunch of other stuff, we may yet get it.

Like I said, I'm not 100% sold yet, but I'm not going to dismiss it in theory.

Is there a link to this survey?
I think it appears randomly when you go to the site.

If you're not a US resident, note that it asks you for a valid zip code on the last page (after you've spent time filling in all the survey questions). It won't let you submit the survey without a valid zip code. Rather than having my time wasted, I checked wikipedia to see what format makes a valid zip code, and discovered this one: 20500. I wonder if Wizards will be surprised to find that the president of the United States visits their web site :D

Cheers,
Liam

Ok where exactly on their site is this survey? I'd like to take it. It doesn't pop up for me, do I need pop up blocker off to get it or something?

I find it extremely ironic that they're restricting an internet-based survey to residents of the US. Either they're trying to do something very specific, or someone really doesn't understand how the internet works.

There are different laws in different countries about who you can ask things and what you can ask them under various circumstances and I think WotC just errs to the side of caution.
