D&D 5E WoTC Twitch Game Live Now

I never got why people like to watch other people play video games or D&D.

Is there an explaination?
I don't usually, but Matt Mercer and his troupe are amazing, inspiring and are teaching me a thing or two about the fine art of DMing, this guy is one of the best, I tune in every Thursday

All the same reasons people watch other people play football.

Entertainment, rooting for personalities to overcome challenges, and/or to improve your own game (that is, if you play).

I do not watch sports. It is boring. All conflict, no narrative. Sometimes commentators try to add a narrative, but it is such a stretch. "Team X hasn't won against Team Y when they play under a full moon in March since 2012! Will they break the streak? Found out, after 3 hours of boringness."

I too, find sports rather boring (mostly because of commercial breaks ruining the pacing), but it is quite unfair to say there is no narrative. They just don't fully explore it during the TV matches, due to time constraints.

That said, you may find yourself enjoying watching a video game or D&D game. They do take the time for a narrative (the better ones, anyway)

For tabletop games, its to see different play styles mostly. After 30+ years, it's still interesting to see how a different DM or player handles something and sparks me to think about how I might have handled the situation.

It also keeps me from living in the echo chamber of my own play group, and reminds me that my own preferences are not universal.

As for watching people play video games, that mostly helps me figure out whether or not to buy a game. Or saves me from having to buy the game. Plus, sometimes the commentary is funny and on-point (Spoiler Warning is good for this).

I've enjoyed the PAX games (even if they're completely ridiculous. I'd hate to play in a game that was quite so off-the-wall, but they make for good entertainment as an observer.) Plus it's cool seeing people like Morgan Webb and Patrick Rothfuss playing the game. I never cared for the Podcasts with those players, though. I need the visuals.

I just watched the first 90 minutes of Critical Role (Matt Mercer and Co) last night and found it incredibly entertaining. You can tell at least some, if not all of them, have some background in Improv, and their ability to play off of one another and Matt Mercer (the DM) is really quick on his feet in reacting to his players. Plus, as one would expect from professional voice actors, each character has a very distinct voice and personality separate from the players, and they're all very obviously having a blast.

In a lot of ways it reminded me of some really good sessions I've participated in, where everyone just gets into the right rhythm of give and take, and the results are practically magical. It doesn't happen often, but it's fantastic when it does. I'm curious to see if that continues in later sessions, or they just happened to catch one of those high-point sessions in their first episode.

For me I'm enjoying Critical Role vastly more than the Pax games. With Mercer (who is a great, talented DM and voice actor) you get they are truly gaming. With PAX its more theatrics, not really a home style gaming group. I'm tuning in every Thursday, you all should support the G&S Twitch, it's pretty phenomenal.

Agreed they bring it to another level, its ridiculous.

Never a truer word. Critical Role is the absolute jewel of that channel. I notice this-morning that Laura Bailey is also going to be playing in Wil Wheaton's upcoming TRPG show.
