I guess I enjoy seeing stuff I don't necessarily intend to use more than you; I've never felt particularly bothered by that.

I guess I get utility from reading some stuff, not just from using it in game.

Meh, depends what the stuff is. "Fluff" (ahem) by which I mean background and so on, can be extremely useful and interesting even if unused. Heavy-duty specialized non-original mechanics and narrow-focused ideas (like, say 95% of PrCs), not so much. UA had interesting mechanics and so on so I never felt like I could have spent my money better.

Not at all. But solving the splatbook problem is something I've seen alot of people excited about 4E citing as thier reason for being excited.

There will always be splatbooks. However, 4E may still be a better framework for splatbooks than 3.X was. I have no idea if it will succeed in this area.
