I guess I enjoy seeing stuff I don't necessarily intend to use more than you; I've never felt particularly bothered by that.

I guess I get utility from reading some stuff, not just from using it in game.

Meh, depends what the stuff is. "Fluff" (ahem) by which I mean background and so on, can be extremely useful and interesting even if unused. Heavy-duty specialized non-original mechanics and narrow-focused ideas (like, say 95% of PrCs), not so much. UA had interesting mechanics and so on so I never felt like I could have spent my money better.

Not at all. But solving the splatbook problem is something I've seen alot of people excited about 4E citing as thier reason for being excited.

_Resetting_ the splatbook problem.

There will always be splatbooks. However, 4E may still be a better framework for splatbooks than 3.X was. I have no idea if it will succeed in this area.

I'd say that's pretty much "the reason for 4e."

The item on their secret agenda is resetting the splatbook problem, and fixing all the broken stuff in 3E.

The TWO items on their secret agenda are resetting the splatbook problem, fixing the broken stuff in 3E, and reimagining the shared fluff to be less idiosyncratic.

The THREE items on their secret agenda are resetting the splatbook problem, fixing the broken stuff in 3E, reimagining the shared fluff to be less idiosyncratic, and attracting gamers who have wandered off to video games.

The FOUR items on their secret agenda are resetting the splatbook problem, fixing the broken stuff in 3E, reimagining the shared fluff to be less idiosyncratic, attracting gamers who have wandered off to video games, and screwing around with s*mul*tionists' heads.

Difference is, this time around they aim to make the supplements appear less optional.

It never was optional if you're WotC's bitch, like me!
