Would a Demon do this?

Right, as others have stated, the plan(s) sound just dandy for a demon. His chaotic nature would generally mean that his plans would benefit him and him alone in the end... or alternatly, noone at all, heh. Malice is fun!.

Demons are binary creatures - there's only one number that matters to them, and that's Number One. If it's not Number One, then it's nothing.

Is a demon "lawful" enough to work out this plan and be patient enough to let it take effect?
I think you're worrying a little too much. Your demon, he's doing everything he can to escape confinement and sow a few chaotic seeds upstairs for when he breaks out. I think your plot is really very good.

In terms of the "Joker Gold", have the demon anticipate that the populace will only gather up a bunch of the stuff and re-smelt it. And when this happens..........BAM! A liquid gold golem immediately forms in the smelting pot, jumps out and attacks everybody! Perhaps the demon has direct control of these golems and can see through their eyes?

Thank you all.

I was contemplating it some more on the way over and have to admit that I was still slightly uncertain. I had figured his way of chaos would have him freeing himself as soon as possible (with whatever promises he could make to the noble) and then perhaps going on some sneaky rampage to destroy all the grain in the city (which is on a small island, so they have to import everything, which makes it even easier for a moderate demon to simply sink a ship).

However, everyone's arguments and the fact that I do like the plan has definately convinced me to go with it.

Anyways, I think the Amazing Dingo's plot is a great one. As I said, as long as the demon isn't a stupid one I think this plot is entirely within a demon's purview.

Wow...a compliment from a true RBDM...thank you very much. Also though, thank you wedgeski and Dragonlancer for the compliments. It was just one of those things that kinda fell into place and the pieces just kept slipping into the right place.

And, PirateCat, thanks for the cannibalism thing. I'm sure, at some level, it would organize into a Kult. I was trying to think up some type of undead presence and perhaps I can somehow work this into it in some way. The demon might be a thrall of Orcus...hmmm...

As for the re-smelting, I should have added that this city is part of a larger Kingdom. The capital is a good ways off and the King keeps a strict control over coinage (as most efficient kings try to) so it would at least be problematic and take time to set up a new smelting/coinage operation in or nearby the city. However, it is still something to consider.

I like the golem idea (a gaunt liquid golem that consumes itself in its hunger) but I wanted to keep the whole problem on a lower note so as to go unnoticed. The golem would certainly raise too much attention. I'm thinking that, if exposed to such heat, the gold turns to copper or perhaps burns away. However, to stop this, you just have to burn some grain or meat in with the fires to counteract the magic in it.

If anyone else has any suggestions, then please toss them this way.

With all that starvation, you could tie in with an idea I read in another thread...

Lawful evil priests offer 'free' food to the starving villagers. However, first they make them sign outrageous contracts - i.e. when they die they get reanimated as a zombie in service of the chuch. Turn over 50% of your income to the church for a decade. Give us your firstborn. Etc.

I could see that as the sort of thing that might happen in a mercantile society?

Oh heck no, no gold golem - they smelt down the gold and remint it...

... and any new coins that contain even some of the demon gold still retain all their old qualities. Only now you can't recognise them...
