Would a maximized chaos bolt continue to bounce infinitely?

More weaseliness :P

Aye I’d say it wasn’t rolled and ask for a roll for a bounce. But one time, maybe only once, it would bounce forever with max damage choosing a target in the world by random.

Mine would. And wouldn't asking the question that way have been a way of weasling out of an undesired answer?

Not if the answer is subject to change based on how you ask the question. In that case it's trying to keep you honest. It's

It's possible to be honest but mistaken. If you don't have the context required to consider the full consequences of your answer, that's a great way to be mistaken.

Aha. But that's the issue. It's not about being mistaken. If your answer is changing based on the context without some official rule to back up that change then it's an issue. If you are just wanting to tell us your ruling in a situation then full context is neceassry but I don't think this question was about your ruling. So I think not knowing the full context of a question provides the best rules answers as you can't finagle and force obscure rules and rules interpretations into the situation just to force out the answer you want to keep something from being overpowered.

Except that it can go both ways. You can ask a leading question in such a way that people leap to what appears to be the obvious answer, and then use that answer to try and justify an overpowered interpretation.

Also, keep in mind you have to roll to hit each time.

So, assuming you're attacking Goblins (AC 15) and you're Tier 1 (+2 prof) with Caster stat 18 (+4), you have an 8/20 chance of MISSING on each attack. Or 40%. Which means even if we say, Each Attack is Maxed and auto bounces as an 8 8, you PROBABLY won't get more than 3 hits before you Miss a target and end the chain.
Initial casting - 60/40 Hit/Miss
1st bounce - 36/64
2nd bounce - 22/78
3rd bounce - 13/87
