I don't understand how you can make a deal with a star. What am I missing?

It's a misnomer: although it is called "Star Pact," you're not actually making a deal with a star.

Instead, you're making a deal with some entity of the Far Realms -- those unknowable aberrations from "beyond the stars."

As Tuxgeo said, Star Pact is inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos, great beings from deepest space/Far Realms that rival or are in fact Gods. It's to one or more of these nameless entities to which your Warlock derives their power. So you're not talking to a 'star', but to the cold dark heavens beyond the mortal ken.

If you know anything of Cthulhu, you can see the influnences in most of the pact-related powers, as they often involve unhinging the sanity of their victims. It's probably also called Star Pact because one of the common phrases/ideas in the Mythos is that one old god or another will come to wreak havok "when the stars are right".

Many of the stars that twinkle in the sky of Nerath are fragments of the far realms, maddening creatures that could consume the whole world with a single gulp.

Stars in D&D are not fusion-powered gasballs, they're... things. Some may be angels, some just points of light, but others are strange creatures that are willing to make deals.
 

If you're not familiar with the works of HP Lovecraft, then a movie like "Hellboy" would be a reasonable model. Think about Rasputin's powers, how he 'gave birth' to an aberration, and the gods he was trying to summon.
 

This was pretty directly addressed in an early Dragon article.

Basically some (or, more terrifyingly, all) stars serve as windows into Far Realm entities that the mind can barely comprehend. Anyone who truly understood how it all worked is too insane to explain it you.
 

Gotta say thanks for this thread, I was kinda sure it worked like that but after seeing that one star boss in MM3 (name escapes me atm) I thought they were all like that xD

Allabar, the Opener of the Way. This is one of the coolest monsters published in 4e, in my opinion.

So the star pack is.a lot more.interesting then it looks at first glance

Yeah, its very interesting and great for roleplaying. I played a star pact warlock for a year or two and loved it.
