Would you buy the Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary for $20?

John Crichton

First Post
I have a chance over the next 2 days because of the magic of ebay to pick up Penumbra's Fantasy Bestiary for $22 (includes shipping). Is it worth it as it retails for $45 but most places will sell it for ~ $40. Help me out. :)

Am I better off putting that $20 towards something else? I have the Monsternomicon and the Book of Horrors along with the MM2. I'm looking for an overall quality for price value.

Yep, its definitely worth $22- heck I paid full price for it and I'm thrilled with it. I have gotten more use out of it than either the Monsternomicon or Tome of Horrors, and I would classify it as a better monster book than either of those. There is a better spread of monsters in Penumbra, and of more widely variant power levels. Finally, the last 50 or so pages of the book are new templates, many of which are very unique and interesting. I have yet to be disappointed with an Atlas Games Penunbra title, and this is one of the best. Definitely get it.

John I don't own it so I'm not much help, but I would like to know where you got that price from and rather or not I can get in on that deal. :D

Email, chat, pm, or smoke signal, just let me know okay? :)

Ah, I knew I would have to throw an explaination in here somewhere. :)

I was bidding on it and I lost. I got an email shortly after from ebay (not the seller) that for whatever reason the bidder who won didn't want it or the seller had multiples, they weren't very specific. Anyway, there was a link in there to Buy It Now from the same seller at the winning bid price which ends up being $22 w/shipping.

Actually, the only reason I am asking the masses here is because this is a tight month for money because of Christmas but I don't want to pass on a good deal. Ya know?

I've been buying a ton of RPG books on ebay lately. If you wait a little while or just flip through some of the suggestions around here you can get some kickin' deals on these higher priced books if you are patient.

Is that common practice for ebay? I'd be leary of someone cruising the boards, finding losing bidders, faking the ID and the e-mail just to get your money.

Of course I'm cynical and paranoid :-)

I've also bought a lot of stuff from ebay, and have never had that happen. The only similar situation I've experienced is when the seller contacted me himself.

I'd be interested in finding out how this goes for you. Please private message me when it is all said and done.

I can't speak for this book specifically, but I've yet to be disappointed in the Penumbra stuff. I'd definitely get if I were in your shoes!

I paid full price for it and I'm certainly happy.

If you lose out on it, try to find a copy of Fantasy Flights "Monsters Handbook". It's another must-have for me.

I don't own it, but I've looked at it several times in the store, I just can't bring myself to pay full price for it. I'd jump on it at that price. I need to start cruising ebay again. I haven't bought any rulebooks there for quite a while.

Nope, don't really need any more monsters -- have too many as it is and anything over about $25, including tax, shipping, and handling, is outside of my new budget anymore.
