As a search engine? Assuming the source data was open and free, at that point its just a more 'natural language' version of google, that pretends its a person as it serves you the answer right? Ethical at that point? Sure.

If however, it crosses into 'tell me a story Hal, and draw me a picture while you are at it' and that story and art is then sold? No, I think at that point you are not ethical.
What do you mean by 'search engine'? Does it just give you web pages, or does it just answer questions by rephrasing either search or internal data?

Ask ChatGPT what the first sentence is in Queen of the Black Coast. If its a glorified search engine built on open and free content, I have no problem with that.

I'd guess you would necessarily gain the ability to reconstruct, in whole or in part, copywritten content just by scraping the web. For example, the grave cleric abilities.

Potentially yes. Considering the example of when I asked ChatGPT the question however, and it hallucinated 4 extra lines of the poem and had edited the third...

Your problem is that it does not have enough fidelity to the training data?

My problems, as succinctly as possible.

1. Current models (corporate ones anyway) are essentially built on theft.
2. The replacement of human artistic work for profit, and driving down wages and employement, by said corps (DALL-E and so on) is unethical, and grotesque especially considering point one.

Aren't you quite active in the DALL-E thread? Is it the profit motive that makes it different, ethically for you?

I think that's reasonable position to have, just want to understand.

Yes and yes.

I'm going to publish some Shadowdark stuff in the near-ish future. I would never put DALL-E generated images in it, and will commission the art I include.
That's interesting. I'm looking for a forum avatar for a bit. Personally I wouldn't have felt comfortable using DALL-E, or indeed anything without an explicit license associated with it. So I have a letter while I look.

I'm not sure why it strikes me differently.

I'm not paid by the post. ;)
