Would you leave your life behind?

I don't mean to offend anyone, but it's pretty sad to see how many people say they would jet without a second thought. Because since it's not going to happen, that's a lot of depressed people.

When you have nothing to leave behind.. why not go forward?

That's exactly my point, Furn.

No one should have nothing to leave behind. Maybe that's a sign of too much gaming sometimes. I don't ever really feel that I'm gaming too much, partially because I only really have time for one game a week (Tuesday evenings), but also because most of my friends don't game. And I spend a lot of time with my friends, and the rest with my family, non of whom game.

So when I compare myself to some people I know who gladly game away two, three days in a row (sometimes almost non-stop!), I feel glad.

I'm even surprised people can ADMIT they have nothing to leave behind without feeling horrible (apparently, at least, they are able to do so).

I rarely game - usually once every other week or so.

I never stated I was happy about the situation, but I am not interested in discussing my personal life either. heh.

What's so shameful to admit? If I got a lucrative job offer but had to move halfway around the world, I'd go. In the same vein, if I had a mythical offer such as this, heck yes I'd go. Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to me.

The wizard guy explains that he will take you to this world where you will begin life again at an age of your choice (teens if you like) in a situation of your choosing (son of a barbarian, acolyte of a cleric of Pelor, aprentice of a wizard etc..)

Key words there are "situation of your choosing", meaning you set the parameters.

Would you do it? Would you leave it all behind?

Yep, but since I'm setting the parameters, that means I am now a deity and crossing realities is no longer an obstacle. Q, anyone? :D Nothing like a little omnipotence to make your day...

Yes, I enjoy PLAYING a hero, but trying to BE one is crazy. Too many would-be heroes die untimely deaths. And there's the hurting, and the bleeding, and the *Professor Frink-like noise* :D

Well there are people like me (and I think Shark) that feel a need or desire to fight evil, defend other, be the champains, ect for other so they can have a peaseful life, raise childern, ect. If I was still in the army I would have voluntreed for combat. This is just another chance to fullfill the need to serve others in a means that I am(was) good at.

(edit spelling mistake, so I never passed spelling :p )

Ok, its midnight, you wake up (you were napping if your a night owl) and this wizard looking guy is in your room. Before you reach for the phone to dial 911 or the gun by your bed etc.. He pleads you listen to him first. He explains to you that your current beliefs on reality and dreams and such is totaly wrong and that there are parallel universes and one of them just happens to be your favorite D&D world. Now before you laugh your ass off at this psycho who's about to go to the funny farm he waves his arms and opens a portal. Now your totaly sure your awake. The wizard guy explains that he will take you to this world where you will begin life again at an age of your choice (teens if you like) in a situation of your choosing (son of a barbarian, acolyte of a cleric of Pelor, aprentice of a wizard etc..)

Would you do it? Would you leave it all behind? Your friends, your family, your dog. Would you get up and go right then? And no you don't get a chance to say goodbye. But you can leave a note. Me, I'd do it in a heart beat. I'd miss my skateboard but an elven girlfriend and a spell book, I wouldn't miss this psycho world one bit.

No I wouldn't go. My family comes first. Now if I could arrange to to take 4 people and 2 cats and 2 rats with me--

Mother, Brother, 2-gaming buddies. my buddies would go in a heart beat

Just for laffs the likely classes we would turn out as

Mom: Cleric maybe 1 level of Barbarian
Brother:Wizard or Clockwork Mage
GB #1- Fighter /Wizard Necromancer spec
GB #2- Fighter/Sorcerer
Me: Cleric maybe 1 level of Ranger
Me: Cleric/

Why should they feel horrible? Is it somehow shameful to not have a great life on earth? Should orphans be ashamed that they have no families?

If you don't find your life personally fulfilling, you should not feel ashamed. You should take it as an opportunity to find a life that is. If that opportunity comes in the form of some strange guy from another world, hey, life is strange.

I agree. I'm deeply grateful that I feel connected enough to this world to have second thoughts about losing it all, but I don't begrudge the people who don't have that a better chance at happiness.

And somehow I REALLY DOUBT that gaming too much is the source of unhappiness. Heck, for six months in Seattle, I was horribly depressed, having moved away from all my friends save my boyfriend. And what I craved most of all was gaming. Now, two of my friends have moved to Seattle as well, and there is Gaming. There is other social stuff as well, but what I really care about are the games; I don't mind hiding in my office other times.

Hmmm. I should ask my boyfriend what he thinks of this topic. :-) I suspect I'm the only thing keeping /him/ here, were such an opportunity around, and possibly not even me.

Hm. I wonder if I'd ask him to stay, in the face of that...

I don't know.
