Would you leave your life behind?

I'm a 24-year old, reasonably successful guy with a good job, nice house, and wonderful girlfriend. Would I go? Probably not. If something happened to change my current situation, making the deal more attractive, I would want to be the gruff bartender with a wooden club under the bar who runs the local tavern where the adventurers always meet.

Folks, you're forgetting that you get to set the parameters of your new fantasy life.

It does not say you can be a god, or even a well-armed high-level character. It says:

The wizard guy explains that he will take you to this world where you will begin life again at an age of your choice (teens if you like) in a situation of your choosing (son of a barbarian, acolyte of a cleric of Pelor, aprentice of a wizard etc..)

The situation of your choosing specifying the son of someone powerful, the acolyte of someone powerful, or the apprentice of someone powerful, combined with "...Age...teens if you like" and "begin life again" all seem to imply you start at first level. You do not set all the parameters of your life, just the initial class. I.E. if you adventure, the odds are you will die quickly in a world where encounter levels are not balanced for you by a DM.

Lots of people seem to saying that those who would go are fools because there aren't any modern conveniences and quality of life would generally be poor.

No duh. Like we haven't considered that.

Its Harsh

Age:25 just so people know.

True true, the situation is harsh. Its sudden, there isn't time to plan everything out. I worded it that way on purpose. That's why the title is "would you leave your life behind". Its a sacrifice. I have some close friends that I would realy miss. And not being able to listen to Megadeth any more would be kinda painful. But like a few people have said what better a trade then being able to affect a real change on the world? True the world is not going to be tailored. Its going to be status quo. You go into Troll Hills and you will encounter Trolls, wether your ready for it or not. But on the other hand, with logic and such, dragons would be super rare, as would Beholders. They would be killing each other. And depending on the world you choose there may not be any dragons or beholders or mind flayers. Some people aren't ready to go out and fight wars or slaughter hundreds of goblinoids. Some people might want to just study magic, or become bards. Your going to level up faster with regular training then off and on encounters any way. Things will be hard, dissapointing, require work and such. But most people who bust their ass in the real world find their pay off to be a movie rental and a can of beer cause they are too tired to do anything else after working their dead-end job the whole day just to stay fed and comfy.

This is just my experience and the way I see things. I've been all over the world. I've done more then most people twice my age. I'll make the best of what I have in this life, but if that portal opened, you couldn't clock the speed I would leap through it.

Oh last thing, I sneer and giggle at those who say "I'm not afraid to die" unless they've looked death in the face at least once. I spent some time in the ER of a hospital and I saw people praying to gods I doubt they even considered in life. Gods that they hoped and hoped would realy be there when the lights went out.

I guess, for me, things are as follows:

1.) I haven't given up yet on being able to do the stuff I want to do here yet. So I wince at the constant descriptions of dead-end jobs and cans of beer and video rentals and stuff. I don't feel like that's my fate.

2.) It is hard for me, if I do any real thinking about it, to feel like things would be signifigantly different in ye olde fantasy worlde. That's just the way I feel. Now, as I mentioned, in the non-massive-sacrifice version of the offer, yeah, I'd take it-- just like I'd take most interesting opportunities that passed my way. I'd put up with the unpleasantness cheerfully-- not because I'd have a chance to matter, or whatever (see #1) but because, heck, it'd be cool to see these new places and do these new things.

I see no difference. If I set the circumstance whereby I begin my adventuring life, then I've guaranteed my success.

I didn't suggest that anyone who would go was a fool. I just know what I like and don't like. I don't like camping. My husband says that my idea of roughing it is a hotel with no concierge.
