There are ways a clever character might get around this geas.

The geas sounds great...but how will the wizard get close enough to cast it? In other words, how will he deliver it without being attacked?

As a DM, I won't put in an "easy out". I'd let the PC either eat the book or figure a way not to. Either way, don't pull your punches.

Were I him, I'd make a complete copy of the spellbook, and then proceed to A - eat the copy B - sell the original, therefore freeing you from the obligation. HA!

The PCs are traveling on a highway at the moment 1.5 days from the nearest town. I suppose this NPC might fly invisible into there encampment as they sleep. Drop a hold person on the the PC on guard duty. Drop another hold person on the PC to be geased, then wake him up. Torment him with threats of cutting off his fingers or tongue, or slitting his throat. Then drop the geas on him. If the hold fails fly or dimension door away.

I hear you. Don't want the PCs expecting the DM to come to their rescue all the time.

That said, I think if the PC is geased when they camp next, they would have a 1/2 day to make it to town, come up with something inventive. or subdue and tie up the mage to prevent him from following the geas. Unless they make stupid decisions, the PC will not destroy most of his spellbook.

It is evil and clever.

Tricks like that (or stealing/destroying the spell books) are also the reasons that Wizards have completly disapeared from every 3e game I have been in.
