Would you pay for cool features?

This is just a fact-finding mission right now.

As you know, we need a server upgrade. As you also know, these boards can do a number of things which, without a server upgrade, can't be switched on (we're talking things like search, "who's online?", private messaging, avatars etc.)

So, here's the proposal which could kill two birds with one stone. Pepole can have those features, but only if they are willing to cover the cost of them. In essence, what I'm suggesting is a small voluntary (I'll say that again - voluntary) donation which earns you, for one year, the following features:

• A custom title
• Search
• Private Messaging
• Who's Online?

Those are the things that can be activated on a per-person basis. Things like avatars etc. have to be activated board-wide or not at all.

There's a catch, though. There always is.

The features can't be offered without a server upgrade. The server upgrade can't be done without the donations. So we have something of a "chicken/egg" situation. What I propose is that, upon donating, you immediately get a custom title of your choice. I'll keep a public record of how many people have donated and how many we need in order to get the upgrade. As soon as the required amount is reached, I get the upgrade and give everyone who donated access to the above features.

I'm just looking for a general yes or no right now. Throwing it in and seeing if it'll float, so to speak. I will make a promise - you will NEVER be required to pay a single penny to use these boards.

I thought you were suggesting a monthly subscription fee.

A one time doantion would be fine by me.

Well, it'd be annual thing because server costs continue on a fairly err... continual basis. Not much, though - we're talking $25 or under for a year.

    I donate $5 every 2 months or so just cause I like the place and don't wanna see Morrus put in the poorhouse for running it...

    If I get features for my money, heck yeah...

I don't mind donating. However I see a flood of threads beginning with the question:

I said no, mostly because those functions just don't interest me and aren't worth the money to me.
Not because i think you are a cad........

So when you take bribes to do the search, make sure you forward at least half the money to Morrus.

I would pay for this, and I suspect the "custom title" bit will draw a lot of people in.

I would most definatly pay for those servivces. A couple questions Morrus. Do you have an idea of how much the charge would be? (5$-10$ US) Also how much does the upgrade cost? I want to figure out how many people would have to donate before you could afford the upgrade.

[Edit: Only problem I can think of is, What the heck will I use for a custom title? ]
