What I find most amusing is that I am 100% positive that MANY of the people who are saying "NO!", "NEVER!", "I DON'T PAY FOR ELECTRONS" and so forth will be right in line to sign up if the right amount of perks are offered at the right price.

And you can take that to the bank, high-horse or no.

Pay for a website?

I pay for this one.

If WotC puts out something worth subscribing to, then I'll subscribe to it. It'd have to do a better job of meeting my needs than Dungeon or Dragon did (I've subscribed to Dungeon twice and let it run out both times after a year; never subscribed to Dungeon), but I can see a lot of things they could do to make it worth my money.

Of course, I don't think they'll be nearly ready to replace Dungeon and Dragon in four months...

I won't be one of them, and you can take that to the bank.

I've dropped several magazines that went 100% digital, and see no reason to change.

OTOH, when one door closes, another opens...perhaps some enterprising person will start up their own gaming mag to fill the void...

Nah, there is no profit in it. At least no as a new startup. Dungeon & Dragon only made money because they were established entities. Newer gaming mags have mostly gone by the wayside, to online versions I believe. :)

Please correct me if the following is incorrect.

Yes, but if you didn't, you could still browse the forums and post. What you do is monetarily support the site and that support entitles you to more features.

WotC has something entirely different in mind. Sounds very like if you want the content, you HAVE to pay. At least thet's how I'm interpreting it.

If you say so...but most of the others will. Happens every time there is a change around here.

Look how many said "D&D 3.5? They can bite me!" and now have a shelf full of 3.5 books? Yup, you'll all join...resistance is futile...

You are, so far, dead on, Ghendar.

I've not paid a dime for my time here. I may, at some future point, become a supporter.

But until I do, I can still access the message boards and converse with gamers all over the world. For free.

Contrast that with The Straight Dope (http://straightdope.com/). I used to kill a lot of time over there, as well. Then one day I went to post on a thread to which I was subscribed and they told me I couldn't because I wasn't a paying subscriber.

I left and haven't looked back.

I wasn't one of them.

However, if 4Ed books are digital only, that will be the end of my purchases of D&D material. Why?

Because I will have my bookshelves full of other games like HERO, Paranoia, and the previous versions of D&D that are *gasp* still perfectly usable.

I'm going to strongly suspect that they'll build something with a free (possibly ad-supported) area and for-pay premium content, rather than a 100% pay-only model. No insider info here, just going by what appears to have worked in other industries.

You could be right Droth. I guess we'll find out right?

In any event, I'm not interested. I don't even use WotC's free content now. Not to mention I despise e-zines.
