I wish WOTC would sell the license for D&D (the whole dang thing) to Paizo, or Troll Lords (with close pal Mr. Gygax), or Goodman Games (of Dungeon Crawl Classic fame).

What I'm saying is: gaming companies are best run by people who care more about making good games than about milking the a half dozen variants of the Completely Useless Book of Crunch each month.

If we don't buy it, maybe they will go away . . .

Amen brutha!

In the other thread, people are talking about their spouses and parents being so proud that they finally got in print thanks to Dragon or Dungeon - and I get the impression that the vast majority of the contributors aren't pro writers like yourself. Like you suggest, writing for Dragon/Dungeon probably isn't much about the money.

An online web article somewhere isn't going to pull anywhere the same ego boost and social prestige, family pride etc. that some DM seeing their words in print did. I suspect that this is going to have a huge impact on submissions, if they even bother with submissions from the public any more.

Good point!

I will not pay for it. Why?

Don't like e-zines.
Rather read a physical magazine that I can hold.
I refuse to support WotC for canceling two magazines I enjoyed and cared about.
I long ago stopped buying everything WotC released because I realized I didn't need it all.

Tis cool Mr N

I do know WotCs history as well and it is not a grand one, but if they get the right people into this one, i think they will do well.

Erm, I think I must have gotten my history of WotC mixed up somehow, because the history I'm looking at has WotC being one of the most successful gaming companies in the history of gaming companies, and the force behind the revitalisation of D&D and the launch of the d20/OGL licenses. Which at least did profit some companies.

Oh, for what could have been

Oh, were that that was the case.

Unfortunately, we already had that when Peter Adkinson was the head of WotC and the place was filled top to bottom with gamers and flush with cash.

The results? The company bled money. That's why the suits have taken over.

Alas, we gamers had a chance to do things our way, but we blew it. Big time. :(

I have nothing against charging for 'online content'. I buy PDFs, I subscribe to the Cartographer's Annual over to Profantasy. I have two printers, one a B&W laser, the other a good quality inkjet - I can print up what I want to have in print.

Had WotC left Dragon and Dungeon alone I might have risked a bob or two on it - having a third option would have been a good thing. Heck if Paizo had made Dungeon a downloadable PDF I would have been all over it.

Instead WotC ditched Dragon and Dungeon. They can go pound sand. That simple.

The Auld Grump

With the exception of subscibing to the Cartographer's Guild Annual over at Profantasy...

EXACTLY what he said.

The money that would have been going toward Dungeon is now going to go toward Pathfinder. I'm a big PDF proponent also and I buy WOTC stuff also (from Amazon) but now I'm gonna be looking extra hard at what I consider purchasing from WOTC. Also every chance I get to throw money Paizo's way I will, provided it's something I'm even remotely interested in. For all the crying and hyperoble that goes on on this board, that's REALLY the only way to stick it to WOTC and let your displeasure be known.

"Oh what's that? I have an extra check coming to me in May? Wow, after I put most of it in the bank for savings, I think I'll spend the rest. Noooooo, WOTC you cant have any..."

Um...

And where's the blatantly obvious "I need to wait and see what it's like" button?

I think the "so-called" content comment in the thread title clued me in that the poll was likely to be inherently flawed.

I'm going to miss walking to the FLGS, chatting with the owner, then buying the latest Dungeon with cash. I'm going to throwing the magazine in my bag to make notes about the upcoming session wherever I want. I will not be subscribing to online content, because while I spend a ridiculous amount of time online, I don't use computers intensively when I plan or run a game and I prefer it that way.
