Although we did not play D&D or any other table top RPG, several (like eight or nine of us) of my friends an I used to play Magic:tg at an Old Country Buffet. For those not in the know, an OCB is like an "American Buffet" instead of a "Chinese Buffet".
Oh, man. Complete tangent, here, but . . . I hate buffet dining with the heat of a thousand suns.

I don't even like sharing my food with my family when we eat Chinese, though it's the custom.

Played in "public" (libraries, boy scout camp with lots of non-role players watching) - essentially played with players and we knew D&D was a spectator sport to those people.

I'll echo the comment that I'm not up for gaming in gaming stores.

BTDT

Never again.

Five minutes after starting you have at least one person standing over the table/bench/whatever- "what are you doing? Where did you get those dice!?! Is this like Dungeons and Dragons- oh, it is-"

Playing in public is kin to not playing at all in my experience and is not worth even considering.

Our gaming group started out as a public gaming group at the local public library. Twenty five years later we're all still together but playing in private. It was a great way to get new players exposed/interested in the game, but it did have drawbacks such as the occasional disruption from people asking questions. I would love to start a local gaming club at the local library to get kids interested in it. Does anyone know if WOTC still has their 'D&D in the Library' program or did that get canceled?
