I only read the first book and that was a long time ago, but something like Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars would be cool.

There would be no humans, but there are races in the works that would be similar enough to humans in outlook to fill that niche.

By vastly alien, I meant more along the lines of different than traditional fantasy. No elves, dwarves, humans, etc... There will still be races that you can identify with, and races that fill the niche that those races fill as well.

The world is going to be millions of years after the fall of a technologically advanced alien civilization. "Magic" is going to be the manipulation of energies that emanate from the planets core. All spells fall under this "magic" as there are no "true" gods, although there is religion and some of these "mages" believe their ability to manipulate the energies to be god-given.

Another question then:

What would YOU like in an Alien Fantasy setting?

If done well, yes. The problem is done well. New races that are far removed from humansd are very hard to understand. There is so much we as humans understand about races like us that does not need to put in books. We all fully understand how biped creatures operate. Sure, tall or small is a bit different, but there is a fundemental understanding. Same with us being mammels.

That's my biggest problem with new races. People never explain many of the basic things we understand about ourselves.

it could work, but i doubt it would have a very wide appeal.

Jorune was a role-playing game set on an entirely alien world, and i don't think it sold very well.

the description of your world sounds a lot like Tekumel, though i don't know all that much about M.A.R. Barker's work other than what i've seen and read second-hand.

All of the races in the works are bipedal humanoids that were either decended (thru evolution) from either mammal or reptilian stock. They all originated from one of two (reptilian or mammal) races that over the course of their history, millions of years, diverged due to various reasons such as environment, "magic" (term used loosely, as our "magic" system is of a more scientific bent than a mystic one)

I will talk with my partner and see what we can post to give you some idea what we are working on.
