Would you spend $100 for a monster book?

If it was managed by Scott Greene, edited by John Cooper, illustrated by top-tier artists, written by top-tier designers, designed by Super Unicorn, and published by a company with a stellar track record for quality, YES.

... I really doubt I'd spend $100 on a monster book. If so, it would have to be at least 80% useful. Would you?

I can't imagine that I would. It would have to be something so extraordinary that I don't have words to describe it.

I doubt I'd buy such a thing. If nothing else, at 1000 pages, it'd be awkward to use at the gaming table. I don't have much use for books that are difficult to use as a reference at runtime. Gotta flip through a large fraction of 1000 pages to find one monster in the session? And if you aren't playing at the DM's house, can you imagine him lugging it along to use? MIght be cost-efficient in terms of content, but a definite loss in terms of usability.

Might be a bit better if it came along with a .pdf of the product - I could use the actual tome during prep, and then print out the pages I'd need for the session.

Does it play DVDs, too?

Gawd, no. The last time I agreed to buy a $100 book was DC's hardbound "Crisis on Infinite Earths" collection. A nice enough product, but I still regret spending that much money.

You too eh? I even got a free poster with it.

Too afraid to actually pull it out of the plastic though. Still in mint condition. Wish I knew that they were coming out with a paperback version though as it makes me feel stupid to have spent that much money when they said that a paperback versio nwas out of the question (and you too JLA Earth 2 or whatever it was that first (re)introduced the evil Justise Leaugers)

I have spent $100 (and more) on books in the past, but they've had some special extras.

Dave McKean's Bitten and Bruised. An extremely limited edition that I paid $225 for. It included a McKean original. This is a small book in a case, all B&W. It might be 60-pages long.

Ashley Wood's Uno Fanta, signed. I paid $100 but it also came with an original sketch.

Dave McKean's Cages limited HC. Wow. Well worth $100.

So it's not that I won't spend $100. It's that I expect something wonderful and special.

I generally like Mongoose's products (though I'm bitter about them de-coloring the later OGL books), but I haven't even used most of the monster books that I DO have, and I've spent well over $100 on them collected. Unfortunately, most book stores won't carry it so I can flip through it (we don't have local gaming stores), so even with amazon's 30% with free shipping, I don't think so....

When the WLD was announced I was incredulous. A massive dungeon crawl with 800 pages? Sounds like a hackfester’s wet dream. Once I had a chance to look at it I realized that Alderac did a fantastic job with it, and in essence gave me 15 large modules for the price. It was a bargain.

I've been bashing Mongoose ever since I purchased Sheoloth and looked through their Quint books, I swore that I'd never purchase another one of their products. However over the years a couple of them crept into my library without my realizing it and I ended up finding useful content from them. These being the Ultimate Game Designers Handbook (for the Grim and Gritty system), and their Strongholds and Dynasties (for designing my PC's town). I recently even went out of my way to purchase a copy of Paranoia, which is actually BETTER than the earlier versions of the game. So I will no longer bash Mongoose.

I own at least seven hardback monster books. I've not even scratched the surface of the creatures available in them to include in my gaming, however if Mongoose (whose chief editor has sworn up and down is going to improve their editing) produces the great monster book of all monster books I would certainly give it a look. I believe it’s unfair to demand color art from such a project as a requirement for purchase as there isn't any possible way a company could produce a 1000 pg product and make it color for $100.00 and still turn any kind of profit. My WLD book has received a lot of handling and use, and at 840 pages the binding is holding together just fine. So if Mongoose is reading this thread I say kudos and good luck, if you produce a solid quality product you likely have a customer in me.
