Would you take a Polymorph for your Country?

And what about using a Polymorph Other spell as a form of punishment for criminals? A rapist may be changed into a Nymph (without the Blindness and Death powers) and then given to the military as a recreation toy... A large, powerful serial killer might be changed into a tiny kobold or goblin to be made easier to handle, and put to work in a mine. In myth, the Harpies and other creatures were originally humans changed into a monsterous form as punishment. Imagine a goddess of the hunt changing a poacher into a deer, forced to run for his life from his hunting partners...

One army has all soldiers polymorphed into giants, the other has a couple wizards with wands of fireball! Guess who wins! ;)

Really, if you start to think too much about this, you will slowly advance to a point, where you can only realize, that spellcasting is broken! :D

Oh, and the third side has a single 20th level spellcaster who singlehandedly defeats both armies in a few minutes and then moves on to the next major city and obliterates that in another few minutes and then gets stopped finally by a band of adventurers, who are equally powerful!

Stuff like this works with low-level magics, but once you move on to higher level stuff...

Considering that Polymorph is normally cast by a level 7 or 8 spellcaster, I think we would be seeing a lot less Giants out there in the armies of polymorphed troops. (Max HD of the assumed form being equal to the caster level or the recipient's level, whichever is higher).

Also, remember that a Fire Giant, weighing in at 7,000 pounds, is going to require around 46 times as much food as a normal footsoldier.

I think that smaller forms will be more popular for scouting and so on, but that the rank-and-file soldiers would not see much service in alternate forms, no matter how cheap it gets.

Talk about expensive, a 4th level spell cast at 7th caster level.

$$$$$$$$

Better hope these wizards are in significant numbers and are particularly patriotic.

It would be a slow process building up companies which would be susceptible to dispels.

I think using it for recon, covert and messengers would be better.

Greatt response!! Thanks!

Hellhound - Hmm, I will admit that I hadn't thought of the "How much does a Giant eat anyway?" issue. That would pose a problem, and limit the usefulness ...

Small forms (like Hawks for Scouting and Messengers) I think would still be useful. And maybe Orc, or especially Ogre, would be quite useful, without requiring too huge an outlay in logistics.

Jurgen - Please do!

Horacio - Well, get SHARK in here then! :)

Jeph & Privateer - Yes, that would be interesting! Imagine the PCs accepting a commision like this! Or, of course, there's always the "You meet a particularly intelligent Horse" scenerio ... but of course, he's not really a horse at all! This would be great to give a PC a cool mount for one adventure, but then take it away "within the game" when the mount get's Poly'd back into his original form! The PC couldn't feel bad about it either. Oh, man, the story possibilities ... hadn't even thought about it from that angle!

Limper, Cousin_avi, DM with a Vengeance - Thanks for the enthusiasm!

Fade - Thanks for keeping it real ;)

Happy Monkey - See my "How do Wizards pay taxes thread?" for the idea of the mandatory National Spellpool. :)
