Would you use Fire Archons in 3.5?

Heck yeah, I'll use them. The concept seems pretty cool to me. I'll definitely power them down a bit first. For some reason they seem a little overpowered for the CR's 6-8. Especially if you want to throw them at the PCs in the group sizes mentioned in the article.

Meh. Not sure I would. I understand where they're coming from with the 'purposeless' elementals and the need to make 'cooler' elementals, although I'm not sure they've succeeded. They've essentially created holy elementals - deifying elementals and calling them archons. Woo. I liked elementals as a force to be commanded and controlled, and that's where the 'neutral' elementals of 3e were useful. Worshippers of fire or ice gods could then command them much like evil clerics command undead. They're servants. That's not saying an holy elemental is useless, just meh.

Sure, why not? If they fit the right context ...

But what's wrong with hound archons? I like hound archons much like I like hellboy. They were just cool. The change for changes sake is again what really cheeses me off. I don't havea problem with fire based angelic criters. Ialso don't have a problem with dog headed angels.

Anyway, yet another aspect off 4e that sits more negatively with me than positively!

I'll use the Fire Archon right alongside my Hound Archons. If I'm given a mini and a 3.5 statblock for a critter, I will probably find a way to use it. I've enjoyed the late-3.5 monsters in MM4 and MM5, and this guy (the Fire Archon) seems to be from the same design school.

Any monster with a good concept and that is not too unbalanced, can find a home in my games. I like the Fire Archons, and loved using the Hound Archons.

No.

Although, as a side note, I can't even see any of these links to 4E promotional material, because it requires a login to do so. I'm sure most of you guys have a login, but it seems funny to me to "lock out" anyone from what should be promotional materials for a new product.

Oddly enough, I have been planning to have the PCs in the next campaign I run taking on a cult dedicated to freeing the mad goddess of elemental fire that the dwarven god had sealed away thousands of years before. I had originally planned on putting their base in a bog-standard volcano, but the idea of a fire font seems much more appropriate. More to the point, the archons would make these cultists a credible threat to the dwarves, especially if they have found the means of constructing a forge to mass-produce them by slaying other elemental creatures. Of course, it will be up to the PCs to figure out how to put a stop to that...

I certainly won't be replacing all the archons with elemental ones, since I already have gone out of my way to account for their existance in my homebrew's cosmology, but I don't think the term needs to be exclusive.
