Writing an introductory dungeon adventure - need more ideas!

Hello everyone!

First some background information; a guy named Mikael Börjesson began some time ago to translate the SRD's of D20 DnD into swedish, which will hopefully result in a free downloadable, swedish OGL D20-based RPG before the end of this year (you can download what he's finished from his website, if you understand swedish). Liking the idea of the project, i want to contribute in some way, and what i have in mind is a free, introductory dungeon adventure, in which i will try to capture the feeling of the old school adventures (especially the Bx-series for OD&D), aimed mostly at newcomers (in regards to DnD as well as roleplaying in general).

I've made some sketches on the first dungeon level (i've decided to have three dungeon levels in this particular adventure), as well as written down some notes on certain ideas i have for it. It will not be the most original level 1-3 adventure you've seen, but that's not the point either. I have some cool ideas though, but not enough, i feel. I would dearly appreciate even the smallest ideas, so if you guys could post some, i'd be very thankful :) . It doesn't have to be anything big, just an interesting encounter, some plot idea, some nasty trap or whatever. Of course, i will mention your name(s) in the "credits" section in large, friendly letters ;) .

What i've come up with so far for this three-level dungeon is this; it will be the home of an old, gnome wizard (not evil, more like true neutral), located under the two-story house of said person. Rumours says that lately, the old wizard has been reported missing, and the adventurers are, of course, not late to "investigate" the matter. The truth is that age finally has taken it's right on the wizard, and upon visiting an old friend, the man had a stroke (or something like that), and was forced to be taken into care by a local temple. Very ill, and somewhat demented, the gnome has got no ways of returning to his home (at least not in the near future).

In the dungeon, the wizard's familiarus Trotch is still following the last orders that his master gave him, to protect the place (and especially the gnome's collection of rare, old tomes) from intruders. Because of the strong link between the minds of the wizard and the familiarus, though, the illness and dementia of his master has made Trotch mad and very paranoid. He is defending the household with monsters that he has summoned, traps that he's made etc.

The adventurers are not the first ones who tries to conquer the dungeons, a large band of halfling rogues has recently arrived and are currently trying to fight of some monstrous spiders on the first level. The band was hired by another wizard to steal one of the rare, magical books from the gnome's collection, and will, at least at first, be hostile to the adventurers, presuming they are servants of the gnome wizard, but they could also be talked into "cease fire", or even some kind of alliance (why go down into the dark themselves when they can let the PC's do the dirty work and then steal all the goodies from them when they get back up?).

On first floor, i've made two of the main corridors "sloping floors", which will fool the players into thinking that they has descended or ascended one level when, in truth, they are on the same level. I love doing stuff like that to my players  .

Another "cool idea" i have in mind is a small zoo/botanical garden on the second dungeon level containing all sorts of plants (of which some, of course, are in fact monsterous plants that loves the taste of adventurers) as well as a small cave with a family of yellow apes (from one of the wizard's experiments). Gardening and zoology was two of the wizard's greatest hobbies, and he loved using his magic to "play around" with mother nature.

The third level will contain a series of traps as well as some tougher monsters.

So, dear folks at Necromancer Games forums, do you have any more "cool ideas" for me to use in this adventure?

Oh yes, i almost forgot, simple b/w illustrations are also very appreciated as i plan to pay large attention to the "nice look" aspect in this module :D

BUMP!

C'mon folks, haven't you got even the shortest and simplest ideas for an encounter or a room in my dungeon? Remember that this is a project to draw new, swedish roleplayers into the hobby in general and DnD in particular! More gamers means fresh blood to the community!

And yeah, if there is interest, and if i have time, i might also translate the adventure to english when it's finished (with the help of some english-speaking person, who could edit and develop the language).

what is the average level of the party and what type of classes are they playing. if they are low levels, you could have them face a band of homunculous that the wizard once used as servants.

Pritty pleaze?

Please people, can't you just post one or two simple but yet cool ideas? It won't take long... It's for the sake of our Hobby, fer cryin' out loud

So, here's a problem: why the heck did this guy have giant spiders in what is effectively part of his house?

There are two main types of dungeons: inhabited and uninhabited. I think you can run into some real problems mixing the two. Giant spiders (and any creature which doesn't move around much but which is deadly) probably doesn't belong in an inhabited dungeon. Heck, this is less like a dungeon and more like an extended basement and workroom.

So let's keep the idea of the three-level dungeon, the gnome wizard, the insanity, all that good stuff. Now, ask yourself: while the gnome was there, what creatures were in the dungeon?

- apes (how did he smuggle them through town and into the house? He must have some sort of cargo access into the dungeon, for he certainly didn't bring them down the stairs)

- interesting plants (started from seeds. Perhaps he has made friends with them, and they like talking with gnomes... sort of like trained guard dogs.)

- the familiar. He can control the traps, let loose cage locks, etc.

- etc.

Now, most importantly, ask yourself how many ways there are to get into and out of the dungeon. If there is just one, the house, then there will be no wandering monsters like the giant spiders. If there is an exit to a cave or the sewers, there may be some additional creatures, assuming that they could get the (heavily barred) door open.

I hope this helps!

Let's go with some steryotypical Gnome...

Since Gnomes can speak with burrowing animals, atleast in 3.0, a family of badgers or wolverines would be a decent encounter at first level.

A dungeon level made of one way illusionary walls. Visible from one side, see-thru from another, its like having four dungeons in one.

Alchemical traps and labs. Whats better than a pit trap? Well, a pit trap with spikes. But whats even better than that?! A pit trap with FLAMING spikes. Also, alchemical items are good low level treasure. Useful mostly at low levels, they will help the PC's, and they probably won't be unbalacing even in decent quantities. They are also pricey at low levels, so good swag.

Traps will probably be designed to immobilize tall people; that way, if the gnome sets them off, he'll still be fine. Thus, pit traps with a locking top will have a small escape tunnel that a gnome could barely squeeze through (DC 15 for small, DC 25 escape artist check for medium creatures.) Darts coated wit5h sleep poison will shoot out from the walls 4' and higher above the ground. That sort of thing.

How about some animated objects? That sounds fairly gnome-like. Say if the password isn't said within a certain amount of time upon entering a room (a fairly important room, like a library or labratory), the rug tries to roll someone up, a vase jumps over his head, the candelabra runs for help, and the teddy bear tries to tickle the intruder to keep him helpless.

Traps could also be used to seal off sections of the dungeon.
This would then require ingenuity to figure out how to get
over to those sections. For example, maybe a trap floods a corridor that is the only way to another section of the dungeon.

Given that the guy owning the dungeon is out of the picture,
I think it would be fine to have monsterous insects down there. Just have a toppled container of Miracle-Grow in the arboretum section. Got on insects. Made them big. Could even have a little giant ant colony down there.
