Do you notice that it's the process that takes 24 hours? The caster needs to eat and rest, so I can't see the caster working for 24 hours straight.

Where as I can imagine that happening, likening it to a graduate student putting in some extreme effort to finish off some piece of work...

...I have to conclude (given the lack of any 'why we did things this way' 'what our assumptions behind this were' text) that it's as vague as it is to leave it to GM's to decide how things work for their own campaign - hence the question seeking how others have handled this...
