Another twist: What happens when more than one opponent (in this situation) beats the fighter in the trip check? I assume that each untripped opponent would get a chance to trip the fighter, but our DM was wondering if some of them could use Aid Another to improve the chances of one.

Just as a point - you cannot Aid Another on an attack of opportunity. An AOO is a single melee attack only. While you can trip or sunder or whatever, you cannot do anything that is not considered a melee attack.

Yes, having read it more closely, Aid Another is a standard action, and and an unsuccessful trip attempt does not grant a standard action, it grants a chance to make another Strength check to trip the original tripper. (Note that this reaction is not an AoO, either.)

WWA grants one attack for each opponent in reach. If you're surrounded by 5 opponents, WWA grants five attacks.

For each attack that successfully trips an opponent, you can make a single melee attack against that opponent. So if you attempt five trips, and succeed on three, you'd make your single melee attack against each of those three.

Why do you get extra attacks in this case and not in the case of WWA and Great Cleave when you down one of the opponents while using WWA?

Because of the specifif wording of Improved Trip. When you successfully trip an opponent with improved trip, you get an immediate melee attack as if you hadn't used your attack for the trip attempt. Note that it never says it is an extra attack. It is an immediate attack, as if you never made one yet against that opponent.

Let's say for simplicity that we make a Whirlwind Attack when only two opponents are in reach.

Thus, we get to make a total of two attacks - no bonus or extra attacks, because WWA prohibits them.

We attack the first opponent; one attack. We attack the second opponent and drop him; two attacks. We would normally get to use our Cleave feat, but we've already made two attacks; the Cleave attack would be a third, and WWA says no.

Now let's try it again. We attack the first opponent; one attack. We attack the second opponent and trip him; two attacks. At this point, Improved Trip allows us to make a melee attack as if we had not used the attack to trip. So as far as Improved Trip is concerned, at this point we have only made one attack, against the first opponent; we have not used our second attack to trip the second opponent. The melee attack against the prone second opponent is, effectively, our second attack - the one granted by the Whirlwind against this opponent - not a forbidden third attack.
