WWII Minis game?

I heard from 2 people rumors about WOTC releasing a WWII minis game at GenCon. One of them is a FLGS manager, the other a guy active in the RPGA here in Michigan. Anyone else heard this rumor? Any truth to this? Just curious...

My cousin gave me Squad Leader and Cross of Iron a long time ago. I thought wow..love stuff about WWII, looks really neat..then started to read the rules and thought wow..too complicated. If the rules were based on some form of the D20 System I might consider picking up the new rumored minis game.

What you are referring to is the Axis & Allies Miniatures game. The figs will be 15mm. I think I heard that due to delays in getting anything from China, this won't be released until September or so, but should be displayed at GenCon.

Here is a link to the WotC page.

Well I am not too sure about WoTC and a set of WWII miniature rules but if you are looking for something to try out, the hottest and newest set of rules are Flames of War which is a 15mm based set of rules. The great thing about Flames of War is that they sell whole army kits that you just have to paint. No going and getting a heavy weapons squad here and a command group there and some vehicles over there. All in one box with additional units you can buy seperately to expand. Very cool stuff.

The rules that I am used to using are Easy Eight's Battleground which is no longer being published but is a great set of skirmish level WWII miniature rules.

I wonder if the rumors are true about WoTC. I would be interested to see what they come up with.

EDIT : Correction to 15mm from 20mm for Flames of War scale..

:o Oooops. Well, can't have too many links for Flames of War. It is a great game.

Back on topic, here is an exerpt from the WotC page.
Base Set, featuring 48 soldiers and vehicles from WWII plus detailed hex maps of terrain representing the battlefields of Europe, will be first shown to the public at the Gencon game convention in Indianapolis this August and is set to hit store shelves on September 16th. A 48-figure expansion, bringing additional vehicles and troops into combat, will follow in December. More expansions are planned through 2006.

Oh, I was thanking you for the WoTC link. I had no idea they were working on something like this! Me being the miniatures/boardgame 'lady of the night' that I am, I will probably run out to get it. :uhoh:

Thanks.

I've been getting a 500 Internal Server error on the minis links. I found a link to the WOTC page on Google to a proto type vehicle for the game but got a error too.

If you're looking for a World War II boardgame, I recommend Memoir '44 by Days of Wonder. Lots of cool American and German plastic minis (soldiers: green Americans, grey-blue Germans, tanks, artillery, sandbags, barbed wire, railroad tie thingies for the beaches) and counters (bunkers, terrain, special forces, etc). Fun game, easy to learn, good for about 90 minutes to 3 hours in two player mode, depending on scenario). With its doublesided terrain (water, sand, forest, hill, city, hedgerow), and doublesided board (beach and field), you can recreate just about any ground battle you want. Tons of scenarios included, plus plenty more free online.
