there is a lot of fun thrown around these boards about geekiness, and a lot of self-mocking about the same.....but when someone brings up larpers it always seems to grow a bit.

do we, as a group, consider ourselves 1 level up the geek ladder from larpers?

do you larp? have you larped?

i have not, but i have done things equally silly for sure....

LARPing can be a lot of fun, but you have to apply the same criteria to LARPs that you do to a tabletop game. Many people LARP with players they would never get near at a table, and I think that that leads a lot of people to dislike LARP. You have to be picky about what game you join, and who runs it. You have to be picky about system (please please please, stay away from Mind's Eye Theatre if you value your sanity. I have played it for many years, and run it for a year. Never again. It's pretty much the worst system for any game I've ever seen.). You have to pick a setting you will actually enjoy.
For example, I currently play in a Cyberpunk-style LARP biweekly, and it's a lot of fun with a small player base. I know all the players outside the game, and I'm willing to deal with most of them.

clay, this isn't turning into a larp-bashing thread, is it?

I don't think either group (larp vs. non-larp) gets to claim geek authority. Same tree, different branch.

The only reason I don't larp and probably wouldn't try it is that it's not my thing. From the limited exposure that I have had with larps (mostly discussions of Nobilis and some vampire-like stuff) it seems to be role-playing personal angst or issues. Personally when I role-play for fun, I don't really want to focus on that. It doesn't interest me anymore. I know the human condition, I don't want to explore the parts that feel bad. That's what the teen and early 20's were for :).

And for the other type that I have seen (going outdoors and having props, etc.) I could see how that would be fun, but if I wanted to hang out with people outdoors, I would just go to a park, or have a picnic, or hike. Hitting people with foam swords (though fun in certain situations) is not my ideal way of spending a sunny day outdoors.

I don't LARP... might try it sometime... think it's geekier than me... but know better than to mock.

After all, the geek shall inherit the earth. And I was geekier than all them LARPers put together when I was younger.

I am sorry to say, but I think there is a continuum of geekiness that allows LARPers and Table Toppers to out geek each other. I know War gamers, Larpers, and Pen & Pencil players who are so geeky that they define the word. I know others who could pass in normal society with barely a disguise check! Somehow, they are all actors or computer techs, but that is another story.

Please, no LARP-bashing, or semblance thereof - but then, you all know that.

But I agree with Suzi - same tree, different branch.
