i agree with suzi that's it's just not my cup of tea. :)

when i roleplay, i don't really want to get into acting out personal angst and other issues -- that's what therapy is for. :p besides, i am so not a good actor. i would suck at larping.

i don't think larpers are more geeky than us table-toppers, though. that's not how i define "geekiness." they're different from us on some other axis.

clay, this isn't turning into a larp-bashing thread, is it?

i hope not. as i stated in another thread- as a sculptor and former theater geek (no acting, i love the props and set tho) i am fascinated by the whole activity.

i have done some foam sword bashing (13-15 years old, with an older group than myself in the public park) mucho set building and have even made some goblets for a larper.

i use geek as many here use the term, affectionately :)

and i ask because i am amazed there is a divide! i mean, the difference is a cape and a chair in my eye :D

I don't LARP, but I don't consider it "geekier". I've seen a bit of it, and the game is way too freaky/weird for my personal comfortability level (but not "geekier").

I don't LARP, but I wish I did.

Well, let me re-phrase: I wish I LARPed in the best game in the universe :)

When I see footage of that guy dressed as an ogre with that fat guy chasing him yelling "Lighting Bolt!" while some little guy taps him on the shoulder gently with a staff...

Well, it's not exactly what I would hope for.

I think Paintball is basicly my "special forces" LARP, and I love that!

I LARP, I play RPG, I am a soon to be computer enginner (2 years left), I'm shy, I have long hair, I read books in foreign tongues, so I'm way geekier than any of you! :D

Not my thing, but that's the extent of my thoughts on LARPing. I tend to doubt the weird looks I already get from my wife sometimes would increase if I did begin to LARP, however.

Tried it. Didn't like it. But I want to make something very clear.

I AM THE BIGGEST GEEK! YOU ALL ARE BUT MOTES IN MY NERDLY EYE! I ECLIPSE ALL OF THE DWEEBS AND I AM TO A DORK WHAT A GALAXY IS TO A HAM SANDWICH!

Dig?

I used to run what my friends and I all called "Murder Parties" where I wrote up characters for twenty to thirty folks, we all showed up and played those characters. It was GREAT fun. No rules or anything, more like extended improvisational theatre without an audience.

They tended to gravitate towards 40's detective stories because

A) cool names. Mr. Cairo? Vera? Come on. Plus, in a pinch, Nazis.
B) cool clothes. Girls in fur stoles and guys in nappy suits with hats.
C) Easier to limit outside influences -- no cell phones or TVs or Playstations, etc.

20's gangster tales were also popular.

Usually the first hour or so would be a bit awkward as everyone warmed up to the idea, but if you were smart with your character assignments you'd soon have little teams forming up and trying to figure things out, and by making sure everyone had clear goals that inevitably conflicted with other peoples' you made sure it was a pretty fun night, all in all.

LARP? I dunno. Murder party.
