XBOX 360. Please Clue me in.

I'm thinking about investing in an XBOX 360. I found this deal on Amazon, and wonder. What do I need besides the equipment included in the box? Do I need batteries for the wireless controller, for instance? Would I need something to make it work that I'm not aware of when reading the product description?

I'm asking because I'm living in a very remote area, basically, so I need to plan my shopping accordingly.

Also... I understand the XBOX 360 can run XBOX games, correct?

So if I want to play Halo 2 on a 360, I can?

Sorry for the n00bs questions, but I never bought a console in my life.

Here are some tips (from a very seasoned console owner, who also has a 360!):

You pretty much don't need anything additional. It comes with everything you need to get started right out of the box. However:

- The wireless controller does indeed use batteries, but 2 come in the box. (Note that the guide states that (paraphrasing) "for best use, do not use rechargeable batteries"). You can spend more money and buy a rechargeable battery pack and "play and charge kit" (which actually charges the aforementioned battery pack) [editorializing: which, incidentally, comes with the PS3 controllers for free. *ahem*] if you don't want to always buy batteries.

- If you want 5.1 digital sound, you'll need to buy a toslink (optical) cable. (You won't need this if your home theatre receiver has HDMI inputs... but see below: )

- If you have an HDMI input on your TV (and/or home theatre receiver) and want to use it (it's not necessary, as the Xbox does come with component cables), you'll need to buy an HDMI cable.

- If you want to use your wireless network, you'll need to buy a wireless adapter [more editorializing: PS3 does that out of the box, too].

- Yes, the 360 can play a good number (but not all) of the original Xbox games. Go here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm to see the list of games. (Both Halo and Halo 2 work, BTW.)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated, and very helpful! :)

What are the add-on/gimmicks you like the most besides the ones you already described?

What should I know before getting an XBOX that you wish you'd known yourself when you got yours?

I wish I'd added up the prices of all the accessories beforehand, Xbox Live Gold included. ;)

Arnwyn covered all the basics for the rest.

They're hot. And loud (the dvd drive).

Also, if you can get them to play (only about 6 of my 25 or so Xbox titles work), it's kinda neat, they get upscaled. At least the 3d stuff. Looks really nice. (But then the 2d stuff looks low res).

I got mine a couple weeks ago, and the first week I didn't have any 360 games. So I played the old Xbox ones that worked, including NFS Underground 2. Then I just fot NFS Carbon, and honestly, the upscaled NFS:U2 almost looks better than NFS:C. (The city, anyway)
