Xbox or GamesCube or PS2?

I am looking a game systems for my family.
My kids are son 6, daughter 3 and son 4 months, and I am old enough to know better:D .
We have never had a console system.

Which direction should we go? I really am interested in MechAssault, and know that is xbox only, but am willing to bypass it. And know there are tons of other good games for other systems out there.

I have long since given myself totally over to Nintendo. I recommend the GameCube for all things. It has good games for it, and more coming out all the time, not to mention interconnectivity to the Game Boy.

PS2 is putting out a new version in a few months btw, and its loaded with more personal features than with gameplay options, so thats a good reason right there not to consider that one.

PS2: Best selection of games. Can't go wrong here.

Gamecube: Compared to PS2, a low number of quality games but those games are VERY good. Not a great selection of games, tho.

Xbox: Buy it a year from now as you can get most of the good games on other systems for a slight reduction in graphic quality.

Your kids are 6 and 4? Get a Cube. Games targeted at younger kids seem to gravitate to Nintendo's box. Also, it's the cheapest.

If your kids were older, or you were buying a console primarily for yourself, then you'd take a look at the games you want, and get the system with most of them. Or get two or three consoles.

It is all about the games really.

Remember that most X-box games are ported to PC sooner or later, so if you have a decent computer, I would recommend either PS2 (final fantasy) or GameCube (mario, zelda and such).

Edit: For a family console, there can be only one: Gamecube. No doubt about it.

I'll have to go with the majority and say the Gamecube sounds like the best option for you and your family.

Get Zelda or Metroid Prime as you free game and then buy the other one.

The GBA player will be released soon, which would give you even more gaming options.

I agree with everything except owning multiple consoles. You have a problem if you own more than one brand of current consoles.

Really, why's that? How do I go about curing this horrible problem?

And why is that? Plenty of people now days own more then one console. It's not about playing a ton of games or the need to own every system out there. It's about playing the games *you* want to play, and unfortunately no single console has all the games people want to play.

How strange. I had a SNES and a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis). I had a Playstation, an N64 and a Sega Saturn. I'm getting a cube, and am hoping to pick up the other two by the end of next year. And I'll be getting as many next-gens as possible when they come out in a few years time.

Tsk, tsk. Such deviance. Is this problem one that's solved by hanging or psychiatry?;)

On what to get, I'd advise the 'Cube all the way. Get Zelda. And Metroid Prime, and when it comes out get Product No. 03.

Ohh..PN03...If my thumbs could orgasm, they would at the mere thought of that game...
Hmm...on second thoughts, maybe burning at the stake is a better treatment.
