I'm not sure if they do take interest away from my weekly payments. They have a minimum payment, but as soon as I send any amount of money its deducted straight from the balance so I don't see where the interest is being applied (eg, $100 balance + $50 payment = $50 balance, $0 interest?) Silly, I know. Of course they must but it's just not apparent.

$2000 balance + $20 finance charge = $2020 balance.

$2020 balance - $25 payment = $1995 balance.

When they present you your balance when you get your statement, the finance charge (interest) has already been applied. So, yes, the balance decreases by the amount of your payment, but before you see your balance in the first place, the finance charge has already been added on. Furthermore, they usually calculate your monthly payment so that the majority of it is sucked up by the finance charge and you don't really pay down much of your principle at all. Keeping your card always maxxed out is not the best thing to do. You are throwing the money you spend on charges down the toilet, which is usually around 12.99% of your balance per year.

Heed Kenji's warnings, he is wise. Games are good but credit cards are bad, especially if you subscribe to the 'ignorance is bliss' theory. Cast Detect Evil on your monthly statement and you will see.

After beginning the long climb this year up from Credit Hell, I can feel for you. If you got the income, go for it - looks like you've purchased some awesome resources - especially the counter collections, which have come to be my new gamer cocaine (darn you, Claudio!). But it's taking me a looooong time to return up the slippery slope.

Try spending a year in customer service for a credit card company.

These things are what the cover of the Necronomicon is made of.

Hundreds of credit cards, linked to damned souls everywhere.

I worked in retentions for one of the programs associated with the card, a 'protection service".

Suffice to say, people who called me weren't very happy. Ever.

I can sympathise with this. Luckily, I have lots more debt in the realitively cheap world of student loans than in consumer debt, but we used our credit card while I was in grad school quite a bit too. Between eliminating high interest debt (all these recent offers of 0% balance transfers help temporarily, too!) and trying to get enough money to buy a house in a relatively expensive market means my game purchases have been pretty slim the last few years.

Although in spite of that, I somehow managed to pick up the Book of Vile Darkness, Call of Cthulhu d20, d20 Modern, the Monsternomicon, Counter Pack I and the Tome of Horrors within the last six weeks or so. And I got the Rokugan campaign setting for free.

I am but a mere mortal - a puny cog in the great machine of finance. I do not pretend to understand things such as these, but only how to respond to them. If I hear howls on a full moon I put a circle of salt around my home. If a black cat rubs me on my leg, I kick it and run away. If a duck can float, so can a witch, and that might mean you can too. And if there's some sort of interest for my credit card debt I don't see it for it's kept will hidden from me. Just as I might pray my food reserves will last me during a harsh winter, I'll pray that my little offerings to the bank will sate its voracious appetite (usually sent once a week in denominations of one or two hundred dollars. Savings account isn't relevant since why save when you can get it NOW!).

Fi diddly dee
Azure, I'm not writing to chide you on the evils of enjoying your credit. I just wanted to say that this paragraph made me giggle like a giddy schoolgirl. Especially the "Fi diddly dee" part.

Oh, definitely. I don't think my post earlier indicated that I found this uproarious as well. :) It's good stuff.

Best,

Horacio, how I knew you.

Paraphrased, anyway. I feel just a *tad* bit sick with myself for being so greedy with my D20 'hobby' ... hopefully it will pass. Maybe its more like a kid who ate too much chocolate at one sitting. Heh, if even. It's canned soup for me for the month of December; there isn't a way in hell that I'm letting this huge blob stay on my credit account until January.
