XP awards by levels

Per RAW, characters stop getting xp for CR 1 challenges at 9th level. So 8th-level characters can get xp (200) for 2 orcs, 1 wolf, etc. 6th-level characters still get "full" xp (300) for CR 1 challenges, just as 1st-level characters do.

Should the xp "cut-off" level be lower? Unless there is some special situation in the encounter, a 6th-level party could very easily wipe out an EL 7 batch of CR 1s (8 individual CR 1s = EL 7). Heck, a single fireball could wipe out at least half in the opening round.

No, its fine. While in theory these enocounters can hgappen; there is a DM running the game and he can easily have these enocounters not take place if he doesn't want them.

Depending on circumstances, that EL 7 group of CR 1 creatures might be much tougher than it appears at first. For example, what if they're behind arrow slits, have good cover, are guarding a narrow bridge, etc?

I agree that the table gives too much XP for CR 1 & below creatures to level 5-8 PCs, who are rarely threatened by such. I suggest reduce the award rather than eliminate.

Hmm...

You guys actually use the XP awards tables in the books? I just make it up as I go... I'm sure I give out far less than what the RAW says I should give, but I prefer to set the pace of the levelling myself. (And not by changing the power level of the encounters...)
About 2-3 sessions per level works out about right...

The RAW supposedly levels PCs once per 3.33 sessions. In fact though if you dungeoncrawl with a competent PC group using RAW XP they can easily level every other session.
