XP costs --- not a problem!

I'll bet you spent a decent portion of your time below their level, and this was probably fine by you. XP costs are only there to prevent people from churning out huge quantities of materials, not prevent them from leveling at all.

I was always 1 level behind since level 5.(and since 2 people died, I was at their level after that) It didn't bother me at all though since I knew that my efforts improved the entire party a good deal allowing us to handle encounters that we normally wouldn't of been able to.

I've found that adding in options for all classes to spend XP for some gain helps keep this more even. Losing XP does hurt and it can add up rather fast.

Mind sharing a few with the group? I like ideas like leveled weapons and items that take some of the wielders xp to get better and unlock certain powers, but then they can take away from the spellcasters item creation niche too much.

Only because you're from Columbus. :D

First is that other PCs can spend XP to help someone craft a magical item. Many magical guilds actually demand this for custom items. Next, I really like the different fighting styles in the many various sourcebooks. All these cost some XP and the character gains a little bonus. The goal with those is to find or design ones that each chacater will be interested in. I haven't had need to come up with many as when I did this last year the group was mostly fighter types so it was easy to do.

I play a 3rd level cleric with Scribe Scroll. So far, he's made 2 scrolls Invisibility (domain spell), 2 scrolls Summon Monster II, and 2 scrolls Cat's Grace. And geuss what? he has the most XP in the party. Why? Solo adventure. :D

He charges the other characters full price for the item or scroll....

....You may ask why not go get it somewhere else. Well our GM lets us buy magic but seldom is it guarunteed to be available or at book price.

Later

So......functionally, he is giving them a discount. Nice of you, remember to point that out if they ever complain. :D

As far as the original post, I play a Wiz15/Acm1, and I have Craft Wand and Craft Wondrous Item. Craft Wondrous Item is NOT CHEAP in terms of xp if you want to make something effective. I've made several gifts for my friends, and it's set me back quite a bit........

Yeah I guess that guy is giving a dicsount compared to the games prices but to me it would seem kinda sleezy to charge a companion full price. Sure make some profit to counteract the xp cost, but full price, well lets just say with that kind of team paly attitude I wouldn't get surprised if the fighter shirks his/her team play duties and steps up to fend off anyhting in the clerics face. Now I could see a cleic charging a bit more than a wizard with excess money going to the church, but still full price for the people fighting side by side with you just seems wrong.

And craft wonderous items can get expensive, but I think overall at 1/25th xp to gold cost it is well worth it. When you add in recomended wealth guidleines and how much xp you can lose at once the big ticket expensive items are usually at later levels where there high xp cost isn't that high in proportion to your total xp.
