XP distribution to cohorts of cohorts!

I have a cohort who just got the Leadership feat and acquired her own cohort (who is soon to gain the Leadership feat and a cohort as well).

Does the cohort of your cohort gain a half share of the group XP or a half share of a half share for being the cohort of a cohort who gets a half share? Hope this makes sense.

No cohort should ever get the Leadership feat for themselves. The moment they do, they should stop being a COHORT, and become an NPC ... IOW, they "graduate" from sidekick status, to "full fledged character" status.

"Chaining" the acquisition of cohorts is, IMO, abusing the rules. No offense, mind.

Actually, the 3e designers have said it is legal and a good way to simulate the PC building up a large, multi-tiered, layered organization. I see your point, however, and agree it has merit, but this is not helping me answer my question.

I agree with Pax's view on it, but to answer the question:

A half of a half, or a quarter share of XP. The new character is effectively two tiers down from a full PC, and therefore gets a third tier share of the XP.

Edit to add: And that's assuming the 2nd-tier cohort is also adventuring with the party, participating in battle, etc.

Sure it is.

My answer is "the cohort's cohort's share is 0XP -- no cohort has a cohort, and thus, nonexistant cohorts don't get XP."

IOW, I don' think there should be a "sidekick of a sidekick" to GET any shares of experience point awards, in the first place.

quote DM's Guide pg 147 "Cohorts are followers, not leaders." I think this is rather clear about the role of cohorts with regard to Leadership.

Having cohorts of cohorts seems sensible enough to me. It would certainly be appropriate in a campaign with politics, castle building, mass battles, etc.

Most lords of castles and countries won't have the entirety of those who take orders form him be FOLLOWERS or COHORTS, though. That's what hirelings are for.
