I agree with Thanee, the description pretty clearly states that augmenting it raises the bonus, not the cap on the bonus. I don't have a problem with the power otherwise.
Psionicist, your selection of discipline will impact your power choices, since the discipline lists often have powers that are better versions of powers on the general list. If you want "versatile," I would recommend a psychokineticist, unless your DM is overly fond of humanoids, in which case you might want a telepath. But a psychokineticist backed up with crystal shard, swarm of crystals, and/or concussion blast is able to tear apart just about everything... for a little while, anyway.
Some other power suggestions: touchsight (60-ft blindsight!), inflict pain (guaranteed penalty to hit), entangling ectoplasm (touch attack, no save, no PR, no way to escape - nasty), detect hostile intent (can't be surprised), mind thrust (it's an all-or-nothing, but when it works...).
