Yanking your salvaged sword from its scabbard, you chop the orc in half with a single blow. Blood gushes from his bisected corpse like wine from a split barrel. Hot blood splashes over your legs and fills the unfortunate orc's sack of loot. The approaching orcs decide that you aren't worth looting and make themselves scarce. Within moments, the only living things you can see are carrion birds, dozens of which are already pecking and tearing at dead flesh. Hundreds of corpses fill the area around you. Your empty stomach roils at the smell, and you know it will get much worse over the next few days.

Monderefal picks up the possessions of his the orc had taken and looks through the loot sack, he then looks around for a stream to wash some of the muck off, before setting out to look for Lavigne and the Paladin whose mace he needs to return.

You reclaim the circlet and the silver amulet. Looking through the sack, you find a silken Osberry banner (now ruined from its drenching in orcish blood), a relatively intact chain shirt, a barbed whip, two swords, two daggers, and assorted coins and strings of copper cash worth a total of 8 yen.

There appear to be at least two hundred corpses in sight, most of them here at the head of the pass. Human and orcish bodies lie in undistinguished heaps, mixed with the occasional disemboweled horse. The pass twists and curves a bit, and the trail of dead extends around the nearest bend and out of your sight. The only sounds are the buzzing of flies and the croaks and gobbling noises of carrion birds. A lone war hound wanders by, so overwhelmed by the smell of blood and meat that it can't decide what to eat first; it pays you no attention at all.

Most of the human corpses are young; presumably low-ranking soldiers. You see no sign of the paladin or of Lavigne.

From the top of the pass, you see the sun setting in the west, casting bloody light across the rocky hills. Nestled amidst the hills lies a valley streaked with green terraces and pocked with holes and pits. A town of red stone buildings hunches there in the shadow of a red stone fortress. The road from the pass leads that way. Far along the road, near the town, you see a small army, presumably Osberry's from the black and gold banners. It is far smaller than it was when you first saw it.

You can still attempt to climb the walls of the pass if you like. In the distance, you hear the howling of wolves; as the cry goes up, several of the more nervous carrion birds take to the air, and the lone war hound bolts, fleeing back out of the pass with its tail between its legs.
