Year of the BIG BOOKS?

Big books with big print. That's the trend.

Why? Because people buy them. Even adventures are going that way.

Yup. You see 600+ pages and think there must be a lot there. Even though with good layout and a normal font you could reduce the page count by 10%-30%.

Again, for me it all comes down to quality over quantity. Of course, they're even better when used together :D

Add to the list of big books:

The Cult of Yex Campaign, out this December from Troll Lord Games.

More info on the D20 publishers forum on the "adventure path" thread.

We also have the Iron Kingdoms campaign guides, two books at 300 pages...

Maybe it is a trend?
Hm, how much are these supposed to run?
I wish I could say I'm eager to buy possibly $90 of bookage...

I think Mongoose is also putting out a big adventure, though I can't remember the expected page count, etc.

I'm pretty sure it was a 1st-20+ level deal, though.

I like these type of modules. Not only do you get a starting point but you get an ending point. it's a selfenclosed setting/module all in one.

Trend.

Retailers are having a hard time stocking a whole bunch of little bitty paperback books that have a low profit margin. Consumers -- as a whole -- want "vaule" which gets interpreted as a large, hardback book with lots of art.

Personally, if things are going to go this way, I hope to see the return of the box set with maybe 5 32 page modules enclosed. But that's a pipe dream.

Incidentally, how do reviewers intened to review these level 1-20 modules? Playtesting is obviously out of the question.

If anyone is feeling adventurous, I'd like for someone to post links to the websites where all these things are described. I know TLG is doing a couple of things (Castle Zagyg, and the Cult of Yex), but I'm not clear on who is doing these other compendiums. Who is putting out the World's largest dungeon, and what is it exactly?

I don't think TLG has anything up yet on their site for Cult of Yex, but here is a little more detail on it that I posted yesterday on another thread. If you want more detail, just let me know.

Greetings,

I am one of the authors for the Cult of Yex adventure path campaign, which will be published by Troll Lord Games, in December. Just a shameless plug here. Feedback and comments appreciated.

The Cult of Yex is a full campaign of eight full modules designed to advance a party from first to 20th level. It will be released as a single large hardcover campaign sourcebook.

My co-author and I have been storyboarding the plot for over 3 1/2 years, and have designed each module with its own "standalone" story arc, that fits into the full campaign story arc. The modules are designed to be played in order for maximum enjoyment in a truly epic campaign, but each module stands on its own, and is easily played as a standalone, without any connection to the campaign story arc.

We hope that the Cult of Yex Campaign sourcebook will be a great value with the eight modules, detailed city settings, new monsters, spells, magic items and the like. It is designed to be dropped into any campaing setting with minimal trouble. Six of the modules have extra-planar components, with two of them taking place almost entirely on the Astral Plane, and the final module taking place almost entirely on the Abyss, with the party having to choose the lesser of two evils in a demon war.

Here's a link to the press release for the world's largest dungeon:

It is not on AEG's web site as of yet, although more info can be found in the EN World "World's Largest Dungeon" thread.

The accordlands info can be found on the AEG website (www.alderac.com).
