Year's Best D20

Cool.

An interesting idea, and probably the best person to do it.

I suspect Monte Cook has a large audience of folks who wouldn't normally go third party, but do because of his name and reputation.

So, it might be a good way for some smaller scale folk to get some deserved attention.

I hope it works out well.

EDIT: I saw a link for publishers to send their own stuff. Are fan submissions going to be accepted? You know "Book X from blahblah stomped me on the face with quality. It should be in the book."

True, it would mean more exposure, but really, that's all---and that same large audience of folks you mention are STILL going to be unlikely to move into third-party purchases....meaning that all you've really done is give Monte the right to republish your Open Content AND your Product Identity materials, and reap all of the profits.

In return for an ego-stroke.

Sorry, but no. The included content should at least garner the submitter a nominal per-word fee, if nothing else.

I doubt if the amount of material extracted will exceed that which is inside a demo. The hassle of payments etc would make the project unworkable; perhaps a half-page or full page ad next to the extracted material?

It's not quite an ad in a WotC D&D product, but probably the closest one can get.

This is exactly the product I've wanted WotC to do. I expected a "D&D Annual" collecting an assortment of good material.

The thing is, I don't think I have anything that would be "the year's best." I've got some good stuff, but the best?

I would suggest the widely unappreciated "DM Dictionary of Demiplanes" its on my list of years favourite products.

I also think the specialty priests/champions of ______ that have been developing in the DM pipeline have been a great step forward.

Thanks. I'll consider these.

I am curious to see if any big publishers are interested in this, and curious also if Monte's really able to reach that many people who aren't already both knowledgeable and discerning d20 purchasers. Does he have a niche within a niche?

I certainly have things I'd like to be included but inertia's keeping me from jumping just yet.
