Yet another Vow of Poverty question.

If a character with 2 "racial" hit dice, 1 level of adjustement, and 4 class levels took Vow of Poverty, what level would he be treated as for the vow?

6th. LA isn't factored in.

I would beg to differ. I'm not certain that it's explicitly spelled out, but the Vow of Poverty is meant to replace the power effects of wealth, and wealth does take LA into account, so we can infer that the Vow of Poverty should as well.

Yes, in the case of VoP, I think "level" shoudl be read as "ECL". The benefits of the vow do, indeed, "replace" the benefits of wealth, which is based on ECL.

So, I've got to second CyberSpyder on this. ^_^

I hadn't actually thought of that, and that's probably how it should work (and I'll house rule it that way if I allow it), but it specifically says on page 29, "These benefits depend on his character level."

How to interpret that phrase is very much open to question. Normally when they say that, they really mean 'hit dice' - technically speaking, however, Effective Character Level would fit far more literally.

The only other way to interpret 'character level' would be the number of levels in character classes, which would mean racial hit dice wouldn't apply, either. That would just be absurd.

I agree ECL would be more appropriate, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just an editing error, and the designers meant to say ECL. But what's actually written is "character level."

No, character level is "The total number of class levels you have in all your classes, plus any racial Hit Dice you have."
- 3.5 FAQ, page 2, first column.

It's clearly spelled out. I'm pretty sure it's also stated in one of the core rule books, but I can't find it right now.

Edit x 2:

Nevermind

I see. I was not aware of that. It does make some sense that it wasn't just a longstanding oversight on their part.

Still, it would be rather easier if they would just refer to hit dice when they meant hit dice, and character level when they meant ECL. A pipe dream, I suppose.

Hadn't really considered but given all the level terms, one of them should go:

racial HD
HD
class level
character level
level adjustment
effective character level
caster level
effective caster level
spell progression level
turning level
manifester level
effective manifester level

did I miss anything?
