You can't go back. Or can you?

Thanks for this thread! I was considering dusting off my copy of Lost Caverns of Tsocanth, but I wasn't sure how well the 1st edition module would translate into 3.5. Sound like it's not going to be too hard... :)

The main thing to remember with conversions is that the suggested levels don't correspond exactly.

If you keep that in mind, you'll be fine.

Cheers!

I can't read this thread without thinking of this one over on rpg.net. This guy went through and converted module X2 (Chateau d'Amberville) to 3.0, served it up to his group, and has been posting the results.

It's hilarious. One of the goofiest damn modules they ever released, and oh man, does it ever show. Worthwhile reading for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

But to answer the original question, I haven't gone back to play any of the old modules; and if it meant having to use the old rules, I honestly don't think I could bring myself to do it. But a conversion, that I might be able to handle.

i just think it'd end up like the chateau d'amberville game...which isn't a bad thing

Thanks for pointing out that link - I hadn't read it before. You're right. It's hilarious.

"When one of the roped pack mules wandered into the mist and was dragged back minutes later DEAD with a look of abject PAIN on its face, the adventurers knew for sure that they’d stumbled upon a real railroad. I mean, mystery..."

Cheers!

I'm running a party through an abbreviated 'Return to the Tomb of Horrors.' The hardest part has been converting all the unique necromancer stuff - I've had to dip into the BoVD a few times to get the right flavor.

They're having fun so far... but they haven't entered the tomb yet. :D

I'm sorry, but: Bwah-ha ha ha ha ha ha.

NPC's: save us, save us from the evil.
PC's: Sure.
NPC's: Excellent. That will cost you five hundred gold pieces.
PC's: Huh?
NPC's: To save us. Five hundred gold peices. Hand it over.
PC's: You're kidding.
NPC's: Nope.
PC's: We could be killed.
NPC's: All the more reason to pay in advance.
PC's: You know what - stuff you. We're going to join the bandits and smugglers.

Er. Are you sure your DM read that right? 'cos in the modules I've got, there's a 500 gp reward for the party...

Yep, I'm sure.

It's not actually quite as absurd as the above, but the modules had some fairly hefty tax and boat-hire costs that we objected to, particularly considering they'd give us the reward and then tell us about the mission costs...

Heck yes old first addition modules are still useable. My players still raz the psionic warrior for jumping back into the mouth of the green demon when he came tumbling out nude. Of course since it was a gaint sphere of anihilation he sort of went phfft. But hey, he had a reflex save to avoid the consequesces. :]

His response when asked why. I wanted my stuff back. It was beautiful. More so since they had already figured out something wasn't right about the demon face anyway. I loved it.

In the new campaign they are about to start the slave lrod series. Should be a blast.

Hmmm... Well, Tsojcanth might not be your best bet. The bulk of the module is the party wandering the caverns - fighting a different (at the time of publication) "new" (& IMHO lame) monster in each self-contained room & opening a series of doors that (once all were opened) would allow them to go the the "boss" level. Very CRPG. But with the proper mindset, I imagine you can find a way to make it work.
