Forget hat of disguise, choose the Ring of Chameleon. Disguise at will PLUS you can change color. ^_^
Of course, I really like that mirror idea... very powerful. But I think I'd most want something to give everlasting life. With that in mind:
An item that can cast Reincarnation 3/day (hey, I could have gone for 5/day!). That's potential immortality, although whether or not you'd come back as a kobold or not in this world is a question. I'd like to think that you'd come back as an available humanoid (although elf would be beyong cool, the longer life would help to earn those needed XP's back too!). You just need to make sure that you're not the only one with access, so it can be used on you when you die.
Or an item of Polymorph Any Object 3/day. It's fun, powerful, and you can polymorph into a younger humanoid, no worries, it's permanent. As long as noone else attempts to break the enchantment you'll live forever! And even if they do, that will just age you in your natural form for the time it takes to move yourself back out of it!
