You roll a 3...

I inherited a character once (I moved to town just as another guy left) that had a 4 in Wisdom and a 6 in Intelligence. That was quite fun to play, especially because it drove the "Mr. Know-it-All and Tell-Everybody-What-to-Do-All-the-Time" guy crazy. I actually told the DM in private "Whatever he suggests my character will never do."

Ah, good times.

My AD&D PC named Bear was the funhouse mirror of that. I worked a deal where he'd let me have 18s in Dex and Con & 18/00 for Str, while taking 6s in all the mental stats.

The deal with him was he did whatever his buddy & employer- the completely amoral thief- told him to do. Hell of a fun PC to play.

On the subject of long odds: I've rolled four 1s before using 4d6. I also once sat and watched my group roll up new characters using the 4d6-discard-the-lowest method and almost every character had two abilities of 18.

Perhaps when you roll dice as often as most roleplayers do, you're bound to end up with some unlikely results.

That IS the magic of statistics: the bigger your sample size, the more likely you are to witness the improbable!

Well, I don't know anyone who has been struck by lightning.

Actually, in all honesty, I just remember I came close myself: I was in an airplane that was struck by lightning. The entire cabin simply whited out from the flash. But we didn't crash.

What the odds of that are, I cannot say, but I know most big planes take some hits during their service. (IOW, it is not nearly as rare as a strike on the ground.)

Same with me. Plus I've been in two buildings that were struck by lightning.

Maybe it's time I went to church or something.

From 2004:
USATODAY.com - Answers: Does lightning hit airplanes

"...the odds are that each airliner in the USA will be hit by lightning once a year."
