Your favorite fantasy module/adventure

I'm looking to pick-up some new adventures/modules to run for my group. I'm not exactly a DM with tons of time on my hand so I like the pre-packaged-ness of good modules. Good... seems to be the problem as not all of them are fun for the pc's as they are consistently rail-roaded.

So, tell me what some of your favorite adventures are, and why. I'm mainly looking for d20, d&D adventures, but have had good experiences in the past w/ runequest and other fantasy modules. So anything goes basically.

Here are two series of adventures you can NOT go wrong with...

Freeport series and The Witchfire Trilogy series are both awesome and a blast.

I like Mesopotamia quite a bit. It's open, non-linear (no railroading). It gives the DM the tools of adventures and just enough setting material to run it as an all-human, bronze-age mini-campaign set in the flavor of the ancient cultures of the Middle East. It's on my short list of things to run right now.

I consistenly get a lot of mileage out of Dungeon, but he plots may be too linear for your taste. I'm running the Shackled City adventure path now.

The Silver Key was a fun 2e module. I got much use from it.

I second the choice of the Freeport series. Additionally, I found Rappan Athuk and Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil to be enjoyable campaigns.

The If Thoughts Could Kill and Hyperconcious adventure modules are awesome as well (if you're into psionics at least).

Also, check out some issues of Dungeon Magazine. It usually has some decent 1-2 night adventures.

I think most of my favorites are still pulled from 1e/2e and then converted over...
Temple of Elemental Evil
Giants/Drow/Queen of the Demonweb Pits
The Illithid Series
The Desert of Desolation Series
The Slaver's Series
Gates of Firestorm Peak
Return to the Tomb of Horrors
A Paladin in Hell
Hellbound, the Blood War
Dead Gods
In the Abyss
The Bloodstone Series
Isle of the Ape
Die Vecna, Die!
Return of the Eight
The original Ravenloft
The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
The Secret of Bone Hill
B4 The Lost City
I also have a soft spot for the D&D Companion and Master Level modules.
Also there's a Mayfair module called Lich Lords which I loved to butcher the PCs in... :D

My absolute D&D favorites:

A Series
GDQ Series
S2 White Plume Mountain

I also like a lot of stuff from Judges Guild, etc.

But these are not new and new is what you're looking for...

So how about these?

World of Whitethorn 1A: The Hamlet of Thumble

World of Whitethorn 1B: The Village of Oester

I wrote them and the latter was nominated for a 2004 ENnie for Best Adventure of the Year. More information here: http://www.openworldpress.com

:D

Ed's stuff may be what you are looking for. He gives you a setting with lots of fleshed out NPC's, plus a lot of campaign flavor you can add or disregard as you see fit.

If his stuff isn't what you want everyone has made good suggestion for one reason or another. What kind of setting would you like to start out in? Are you going to start at first level? There are several good city type adventures, such as Lost City of Barakus, City State of the Invincibe Overlord, and the Grey Citadel leap to my mind and are all done by Necromancer Games/Judges Guild. Of course CSIO is more of a setting than an adventure, but reading through it I couldn't help but think of dozens of adventure ideas to base off of the locations/NPC's in the book. None of them start at 1st level, but LCoB could easily be made to do so.

A small village/woodalnds setting would be Crucible of Freya, Village of Whitehorn, NeMoran's Vault, and several others mentioned. They all start at 1st level, I think.

Dungeon is always a good source, especially if you have several issues.
