Your favorite LA +1

First Post
I'm looking for decent LA +1 racial choices, it can be a race (no racial HD) or a LA +1 Template added to a standard race (LA +0, no racial HD).

Which ones should one look out for (apart from the obvious Aasimar, Tiefling, Genasi, and Hobgoblin)?

I'm probably the only one that thinks this, but I really like the Kiloren from Races of the Wild.

Aasimar are nice, as are Tieflings.

I haven't seen a lot of LA+1 characters though, as I usually ignore them, having to create low level characters.

Half-Giants and Goliaths have always intriged me to try playing once.

When I want to play something strong, Feral and Draconic templates always get looked at. But my favorite race is probably the Poison Dusk Lizardfolk (ECS, MM3). I don't know why, but I have a soft spot for the scaly buggers. Their addition, plus the Blackscale Lizardfolk lets us have a reptilian counterpart to the standard goblin/hobgoblin/bugbear mix of goblinoids.

I'm fond of Catfolk from Races of the Wild. Their favored class is Ranger and they get the following for a +1 LA

• +4 Dexterity, +2 Charisma.
• Base land speed is 40 feet.
• Low-Light Vision
• +2 racial bonus on Listen and Move Silently checks.
• +1 natural armor bonus.

Not too bad . . .

Thats one of the BEEFIEST LA+1 on the planet. The ONLY thing that really hurts them is this part of sneak attack "A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach." since having to grab a small long spear nixes thier claw, claw bite routine.

Catfolk is a bit OPed for +1 LA. Comparing it to stuff like the aasimar, etc just makes me sick.

Its more worth of a +2 LA than drow is.

Catfolk is pretty comparable to an Aasimar.

The Catfolk have a slight boost on their stat bonuses compared to Aasimar, granted.

Aasimars get darkvision, arguably better than low-light (I argue it is ;) ).

Aasimar get a +2 racial skill bonus on Listen and Spot checks. That is equal to the racial skill bonuses of Catfolk.

Catfolk have a movement bonus and a +1 natural armor bonus.
Aasimars gets Daylight (ok, it ain't the best), and Resistance to 3 kinds of energy.
The Resistances are a key strength of the Aasimar.

The Catfolk are certainly not OP compared to the Aasimar, and Catfolk are certainly sub-par to drow (Spell Resistance being the key ability for drow).

Just my 2 cents.

To add to the original thread: I love the planetouched. We also have a home-brewed gnoll, bugbear, and lizardfolk at +1 LA with no racial HD (for quicker access at lower levels).

Cheers

I like the Goliath, but only because they're currently the only way to get what they've "got".

I wanted to do a Monk1/DruidX Grapple-build Goliath. Go the way of the rock with that Stoneform feat and the PrC that goes with it, eventually get earth glide, just come up under people and GRAPPLE.

9 times out of 10, I find LA to be a hindrance at low levels, and a real hindrance at higher levels. Usually, I'd rather take the free waraxe and darkvision of my good ole' stumpy stand-by.
