Concrete/steel do have a signifigant fire retardent advantage over wood, as pointed out by the original poster.

Actually, they don't. Well steel doesn't.

Timber behaves significantly better than steel in a fire.

glass.

Me, I use 6-inch thick steel doors. On tracks, not hinges. And that's just for internal compartments. None of that sissy wood and glass crap.

When the bomb drops, can I bunk with you? :D

My order:
Wife
Dogs
Cat (he ain't as cuddly ;))
Battlemat

If I had to save one RPG "thing," it would be my 36 x 48 battlemat; everything else, a friend has copies of, and I can bum it off of them until I can buy a replacement. :)

I carry about 75% of the SRD in my head, so I'm not too worried.

Umm...what type of house do exactly live in? An abandoned military missile silo? (which sounds cool btw :D )

Considering he's NorFLEET, I'm guessing he's on a ship...

I'd take the wife. Hey! you said RPG item, and she's a gamer, that counts! The teenager has to save himself (he's got the best initiative in the family anyway), but we'll grab the 4 year old on the way out.

None of it that's what I have insurance for... :D

and a fireproof safe in your parents' attic hundreds of miles away. :D

wife, pets first...and then

Original Collector's Edition boxed set. it has my supplements crammed inside too.

Safety of the wife and myself should go without say, but since everyone else is saying it...

As for my game library, although I have a lot of great stuff that's out of print and not easily replacable, the 3e stuff is what I actually use and that easily could be. And of course none of it would be worth dying for. But if I had time, I'd try to grab my campaign notes and my players' character sheets, then I'd be pretty much all set.

Hmmm.

Would it suck for my RPG collection to burn? Certainly.
Would I risk my life for anything in my RPG collection? Probably not.

I'd hate for all my home-brew stuff to get destroyed. I'd hate for all my D&D boxed sets to get destroyed. I'd hate for my Planespace boxed sets to ges burned also. If I could save only one thing (apart from the harddrive, of course), would be... Hmmm... my 2nd edition magic item cards... nah, kidding. I'd let it burn. Then I wouldn't have so much crap to move the next time.

If I had to chose one and only one Gaming Thing to take out.. I'd die from smoke inhalation while trying to choose :) I'd probably get the book of maps and stuff I've drawn over the years, or pack off my hard-drive. That's the only really 'irreplacable' thing. Insurance and eBay will take care of the rest.
