Your house is burning--what do you choose?

My computer.

Not only is it my primary gaming aid, it's also the source of much of my income.

I swear, the pr0n has nothing to do with my decision.

Oh, and my wife.

Maybe.

Ok now I'm scared...

Just last thursday night I had a dream my house caught fire along with two others. First thing I did in the dream was get my sister's cat which was the only pet inside, besides fish. Anyways, I was pretty much grabbing the things that were good, and thats pretty much everything.

Thing that sucks is that now everytime I leave the house I think its going "poof!" while I'm gone. :( Anyone know where you can get a large bookshelf-size firebox?

For some reason this post reminded me of Fight Club. As if your alter ego has already planned the thing out but to you it's like a dream.

Sometimes it's fun being in my skull.

Last month there was a mandatory evacuation because of wildfire danger. I was not going to take any games but my wife insisted that I take the Stagate SG1 book I had received for my birthday. We also took both of our notebook computers and the box with my dvd collection.

To play along, my campaign notes. Anything else could be replaced or wouldn't need to be replaced. But if you mean what gaming product, my 1E AD&D Players Handbook, all beat up and worn out, holds too many memories.

You could get a gun safe, one that is big enough to hold hunting riffles. Those are about the size of a medium sized bookcase.

If we change it from "one item" to "what I can carry", it'd have to be my computer tower under one arm, boxes of Magic and my Alternity PHB in the other. :D

I live on the third floor of a three story house...so if my house was on fire...chances are pretty good there'd be no hope for me...

but say there was, I'd make sure Chris & Monty were out safe. If I could grab my harddrive & photos I would.

Anything else, even the rarest book, can be replaced in time...

All this should be a warning for you right now: If you have to think about this stuff, you're not taking enough effort to prevent it. A bit of prevention now will prevent a lot of agonizing about it later....because if you insist on building your house out of flammable materials like a moron, it WILL burn down. It's inevitable, and wishful thinking is only denying that flammables burn. Build from concrete and steel. Not only are they non-flammable, they're also a lot easier to come by, as trees become more and more scarce.

You know, most of us can't afford to "build" our own homes...
And even if we could...
Steel and concrete burn at high enough temperatures...the WTC was built out of these. And if there was an explosion...and things inside the house surely burn...
need I go on...?

I think the reason this question is hard to answer is because even though I think it was just a thought provoking way of asking what our favorite RPG stuff was, most of us realized that in a real emergency , family would be all that we cared about. Followed by our own creations (writings, character sheets & journals).

Anything else can be replaced.

Well, right now I live on the 3rd floor of a dormitory, so I'd probably pick my handy D20 Moist Towel to put over my mouth, and my GURPS Flashlight to guide me through the smoke.

But I also keep a backpack handy full of my Magic cards and a CD case that includes a backup CD with the key stuff from my computer. And random anime music videos. So I'd grab the backpack, the flashlight, and the moist towel, and truck my way out of the dorm at a reasonable, non-panicky pace.

If I had more time to think about stuff, I might grab my Player's Handbook, because I have had all my players for the past 3 years sign it.

At home, well, that'd be trouble, because I'd probably have to help my mother get out (and she'd bitch the whole time about me waking her up).
