One and ONLY one? Hard drive/backup of documents. Even things like 3rd Edition PHB signed at GenCon 2000 by Gygax, Arneson, and the 3E designers, my complete collection of Dragon magazine (even including Strategic Review), etc. SHOULD be replaceable. Files full of old character sheets, maps, and notes from old campaigns, though NOT replaceable, I could bear to lose far easier than newer, digitized information.

I'd take my laptop (but more because it has years of emails, my own writing, and my school notes, than because of anything gaming).

For gaming materials, I'd take all my homebrew writings and stacks of homemade maps. Everything else is replacible.

All this should be a warning for you right now: If you have to think about this stuff, you're not taking enough effort to prevent it. A bit of prevention now will prevent a lot of agonizing about it later....because if you insist on building your house out of flammable materials like a moron, it WILL burn down. It's inevitable, and wishful thinking is only denying that flammables burn. Build from concrete and steel. Not only are they non-flammable, they're also a lot easier to come by, as trees become more and more scarce.

If my home were burning, it'd be because I set it on fire. One of the lovely things about living encased in steel and concrete is that napalm becomes your universal pest control and cleaning solution. If an actual fire, probably involving large amounts of thermite, somehow managed to start down here, the ensuing secondary munitions explosions would wipe everything out faster than you could run, anyway. I order ammo by truckloads. In fact, next week, I have three truckloads scheduled to arrive for National Ammo Day.
Dude, I now have a fully formed picture of you in my mind. It's pretty much Michael Gross' character from Tremors.

Yeah, because concrete and steel would NEVER burn. Just ask all those people in the World Trade Center.

As for me, if I'm only taking RPG items then I guess it would mean my computer. My books can be replaced, but all my campaign writing can't. But just for fun, I'll say the BoVD. Wouldn't want fire inspectors finding that in the rubble.

Ok now I'm scared...

Just last thursday night I had a dream my house caught fire along with two others. First thing I did in the dream was get my sister's cat which was the only pet inside, besides fish. Anyways, I was pretty much grabbing the things that were good, and thats pretty much everything.

Thing that sucks is that now everytime I leave the house I think its going "poof!" while I'm gone. :( Anyone know where you can get a large bookshelf-size firebox?

Seeing as this happened to me on 1/30/03 I can tell you exactly what I took. My cellphone and my life. I left my cats and all of my possesions behind. Thankfully my section of the apartment building only suffered smoke damage. My cats made it as did my library. But I didn't even think of gaming when I saw the smoke and heard human screams.

Easy, my Players Guide to Cydra. It's my campaign world.

Bah! Don't fetishize the object.

Ain'tcha never read Fahrenheit 451? Just memorize it all. In fact, you've already memorized it...you just don't know it yet.
