Your (ideal) 5-Person (4e) Group?

Battleragers seem broken to me, so I discounted that particular build.

Warforged 1 Hand (i.e. sword/axe) Fighter.
Halfling Artful Dodger Rogue
Human Tac Warlord
Druid of some sort, unsure which race yet.
Elven BM Ranger concentrating on archery.

Oh! A great build I almost forgot about!

1) Drow Rogue (Brutal Scoundrel)
2) Drow Rogue (Brutal Scoundrel)
3) Drow Rogue (Brutal Scoundrel)
4) Drow Rogue (Artful Dodger)
5) Drow Rogue (Artful Dodger).

Why? Drow #1 Darkfires an enemy - all drow get Combat Advantage against it. Enemy falls. Drow #2 Darkfires an enemy next round... and repeat.

If you really want to diversify a bit, lose one artful dodger and one Brutal Scoundrel, and throw in a Drow Fighter (to pin down weaker foes until it's their time to die), and A Drow Warlord (to assist with healing and moving allies). Both should wear light armour, so they can keep up a decent Stealth check (see below)

Plus, the group shares all the same basic abilities, meaning they can always benefit from their Darkvision (always getting surprise!) Plus, rogue has a diverse enough skill list that the group could cover most skills (And bypass any trap, pretty much).

1) Bugbear TWF ranger (bow and a double weapon)
2) Genasi tactical warlord (+3 prof reach weapon)
3) Longtooth shifter melee cleric (+3 prof weapon and shield)
4) Half-orc brutal rogue (dagger and shield)
5) Warforged battlerager fighter (two-handed weapon)

They'd be tough to take down and capable of putting on some serious hurt. There's no controller, but that's not terribly hard to cover with suitable multiclassing and power choices.

Go with the classics:

The Hero, the Lancer, the Chick, the Big Guy, and the Smart *cough* Kid.

To stick classes on that... I'd probably go with:

Hero: Human Paladin
Lancer: Elven Rogue
Chick: Half-elf Cleric
Big Guy: Human Fighter
Kid: Halfling Wizard

1) LT Shifter Str-Cleric (w/ Durable, Scale Armor & Shield feats)
2) LT Shifter Str-Cleric (w/ Durable, Scale Armor & Shield feats)
3) LT Shifter Str-Cleric (w/ Durable, Scale Armor & Shield feats)
4) LT Shifter Str-Cleric (w/ Durable, Scale Armor & Shield feats)
5) LT Shifter Str-Cleric (w/ Durable, Scale Armor & Shield feats)

Righteous Brand FTW! Who needs DPS when you Just. Won't. Die!??!?! RAWR!!!

(Plus the Gritty Sergeant background for longsword prof and +1 Init)

In all seriousness though, I just love playing with new classes & powers, finding new tactical combos, etc. so my ideal group is always "something different from last time."

I also find that new mixes of Skill groupings can be just as important to the feel of a campaign as the mix of classes. If the guy with Thievery also has Bluff, Acrobatics and Streetwise you get this real Jimmy the Hand feel, while if he has Intimidate, Athletics and Streetwise it's more of a Jimmy Hoffa vibe. For campaigns with the amount of RP I like that sort of thing really matters even more than races or classes in some adventures.

Goliath Battlerager
Longtooth Shifter Battle Cleric
Elf Archer Ranger
Half-orc Brutal Scoundrel Rogue
Dragonborn Dragon Sorcerer

Kind of an eclectic group, but they are the best at what they do (or close to it). Here is a second group that would be fun to see interactions between:

Goliath Warden
Half-elf Bard
Deva Avenger
Drow Rogue
Human Druid

With all the sliding, odd marking, darkness, and bard super-multiclassing, there could be a lot of interesting interactions in this group.

The ideal 5-person group consists of 5 gamers who really like to roleplay, play DnD and are so clever to embrace the whole thing open-minded and simply try to enjoy the time being together. as long as we agree that the day wasn't a waste of time and it rocked for everyone from time to time its all cool.

I don't mind what the players create as long as the character they come up with is cool - cool for them and enjoyable for the group. well, i think we will have a pure primal group soon after the end of our dragonlance campaign... spring 2010. :D
