Your ideal group?

One where everyone got along, felt like they were an intergral part of the story, real characters and enjoyed playing.

LOL, that's a pretty good point...

My group needs to be more serious... I'm working that side right now... And less analytical but jstu do things heroically...

Well, I think a lot of good points have been covered (some of which I agree with completely). For me:

  • Ideally, the members of a group should be friends inside & outside of gaming.
  • They should be tolerant & open-minded about others, yet respectful (esp. when it comes to things like rules for guests in one's home, considering others' feelings, etc.).
  • Everyone should (ideally) be able to provide their own transportation to & from a game. Also, they should at least provide the common courtesy to let others know if they're running late, have to cancel, etc., instead of leaving the other members of the group hanging.
  • Should be able to regularly game 1-2 specific days of the week.
  • Members should be able to bring their own dice & rulebooks, esp. if they'll need to refer to the book for specifics on spells/feats/skills/etc.
  • Should be willing to play & run games (at least a few people--not everyone has to DM, but 1 person shouldn't be stuck DMing all the time).
  • Members who are parents should supervise their children if they are present--make sure the child isn't getting into trouble, but also entertained (& thus, has something to keep him/her occupied & out of trouble). Also, the parents shouldn't have to frequently yell/bellow/screech/etc. at a child to parent him/her.
  • No cheating--maybe an occassional fudging of the dice (once every other blue moon), but not the methodical, habitual, premeditated cheating that some players commit.
  • For me personally, no illegal substance use/abuse. It just seems to invite too much trouble than it's worth. Also no violations of restricted substance use (like minors drinking alcohol or smoking). I'm a bit too old to have to worry about issues with local law enforcement just because I happened to be present when something illegal occurred.
  • Willing (& hopefully eager) to play D&D, Marvel SAGA, d20 Modern, & d20 Lankhmar.

As for what has been said before:

A group of people who understand the paradox that the game must be taken seriously but also must NOT be taken seriously.

Basic knowledge of the rules used (i.e., how to generate characters for a game, what ALs mean, what dice to use for attacks/skills/etc., what certain basic terms mean, etc.).

I think that pretty much covers it.

A while back there was a thread about DMing a bunch of airline stewardesses -- that seemed pretty ideal. :)

But seriously, the above comments make sense. I would add that players should be willing to go along with their DM's judgements with no hurt feelings, even if they disagree with those judgements. In the end, it is just a game, after all.

I guess if I were asking for the moon, it would be nice if everyone knew all the rules of the game.
